The oem setup will work fine but so will the tie bar setup. However . . . . . . .

Dont fool yourself into thinking you wont have to check it. It absolutely can vary from engine to engine and absolutely will vary from one rocker manufacture to another.

I agree. Going with the 731 billet cam from Teague I think and Johnson lifters. Which adjustable pushrods are recommended?

You only need one. See if maybe a local engine builder will loan you one ? I would try it first with the pushrods that come in the kit. If you need to buy one the Comp Cams ones work good and are easy to use.

You should stop by my shop in Vassar, your only 15 minutes away if you need any advice on pushrods, did you used to have the 27 fountain and we talked when you had that giant cam from sterling that was 20 sizes too big?

No, but actually I would like to swing by your shop and talk to you about getting the engine dialed in and a possible dyno session

I think a dyno session would save me a TON of time on the water playing with jets and different timing settings.

Also I would appreciate your advice on pushrod length and setting preload on the rockers/lifters

I wont have the heads for about 5 weeks, so I was thinking about looking you up in January.

Can you DM me your contact info? Thanks!

Also, I have decided to get the Teague stage 1 cam (731 cam) and Johnson lifters versus the Hardin kit since I started this thread

Hello. I am currently building some motors with the Promaxx 290 heads. As I dug in and measured and checked everything, I found I needed longer rocker studs than what Promaxx provided me to make the proper amount of contact depth with the lock nut. I also found that my intake needed a 0.090 offset while the exhaust needed a 0.050 offset to get the contact pattern the most narrow over the center over the center of the valve. So I would definitly have it in you plans to check the valve geometry as you set it up, using an adjustable push rod. I used the kit from jegs….https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/8067...MaAtBREALw_wcB

you should also get a large set of calipers to read the push rod lengths.

I also used the Johnson lifters in my motors.

Thanks Chris

I just ordered the Johnson lifters and cam today. I will not have my heads for a few weeks, but on the phone with Promaxx I added inconel exhaust and also the upgraded kit for .650 lift with the 150# springs. Perhaps you have the 130# springs and .600 lift setup? Also I am using Comp Pro Mag Ultra XD rockers, not sure if that makes a difference. For measuring pushrod length I went with the Howards cams adjustable pushrods

Hi Bob,

I did upgrade the exhaust to inconel and also had a spring upgrade, I want to say some PAC spring with 450-500 pound open. My cam lifts about 0.6” as well.

I used the crowler stainless rockers. The rockers do make a difference where the contact pattern will be. See where yours come out and if necessary see if there are offsets offered.

Chris
