FantaSea 1999 DONZI 35ZF Refurb

Hey everyone,
We recently picked up a 1999 Donzi 35 ZF that was originally powered with trip Optimax 225's.The previous owner spent a ton of time and money on converting it from a fishing boat to more of a pleasure boat before he decided to go in another direction. We're in the process of taking what he did and turning it into a true performance center council. Many of you may have seen and followed the updates to my Baja 25 Outlaw PHIL'R UP https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...25-outlaw.html so I figured I might as well start a new thread for FantaSea.
Before we get into the cool stuff slight rant. I understand that most people don't highlight the flaws of your boat when your trying to sell it (buyer beware right). But blatantly lying about what your boat has and doesn't have gets my blood boiling and the thing is had he been honest with everything we still would have bought the boat AS IS. If you're on FB you may have seen the ad for the boat we bought:

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ec439226d3.png

1. Found out the boat is a 1999 model when we titled it
2. We were told the engines were 250 opti's with a tune to make them put out 300 which is why the cowlings say 300. When scanned at dealership they are 225 opti's and even with a tune there's no way you can get to 300 and have them last any amount of time.
3. As advertised no codes went off and I know for a fact that if one of engines ran out of oil it wouldn't throw a code because the sensor had a jumper wire across it.(this gets into the buyer beware area a little since it is visible but I'd argue that it isn't ethical)

RANT OVER, on to fun stuff :boat:

Stuckonstupid 06-24-2020 11:56 AM

Sweet looking ride. I have a theory on why they jumped the oil sensor as I have the same motor and did the same thing. When you run the oil reservoir low, you have to pull the engine cowling and pop the top on the engine reservoir to allow oil to fill the air gap, being that it’s a triple, I’m guessing they did this out of laziness as it looks like it would be a pain and the alarm on the mercury smarcraft is effin LOUD! Good luck with it, looking forward to seeing your progress.

Congrats on the new boat! Looking forward to following updates.

iaoutlaw 06-26-2020 01:28 PM

The trip from Louisiana to LOTO should have been a warning for what was in store for us. 2 blown tires, 2 messed up fenders(1 of which had to be strapped to the bunk to keep it off the tires) and a long night of driving. Once Jeff got the boat back to LOTO the fun didn't end. Left the boat at PB2 overnight and the next day when they went to launch it some jackass decided it would be ok to park his empty truck and trailer in front of it. Water patrol was able to locate and have him move his truck so they were able to launch the boat which turned into a short ride. Shortly after getting on plane a hydraulic line blew causing the motors to go full lock to starboard. This fun sequence of events resulted in bringing the boat to Big Thunder Marine where we found out the engines were 225's. At this point we decided that a repower was in order sooner than later so the search began for some verado's. BTM did have a nice pair of 300's but due to our budget there wasn't enough room to have them repower and rerig it. So we decided that our only option at this point was to bring her back to Iowa so we can access and clean her up.

Motor Monday

The replacement motors have arrived!! Triple 300 Verado’s off a Nor-Tech that was repowered to quad 400’s. I have to say the previous owner has been awesome to work with. Minor hiccup occurred during shipping. Either the top cowling came off or wasn’t properly latched when installed in the crates and scuffed up the top and mid cowlings.

Before the derig began we covered the SeaDek with sticky backed plastic. Cheap insurance and hopefully keeps it clean. So with the new motors in the old ones can come off.
Unfortunately a death in the family required me to step away for a week so I only have a few pics the other 2 guys took. But they got a lot done while I was gone. Engines off, controls off, started to take the dash apart, & created a list of everything we need to covert from cable controlled opti’s to DTS verado’s.

Not the most exciting post but probably the most important. One thing we learned that we did correctly when updating Phil’R Up is to take a lot of before pictures. This build is no different we have a shared google drive that contains hundreds of pictures already.
Few examples of the before wiring pictures:

Especially the gauge wiring pics are invaluable unless you feel like spending a ton of time researching each switch on how it functions.

Wow! You think you've got a boat that's needs a little tidying up, then you dig deeper......and deeper....

Looks like you've got everything covered, should be pretty special when you're done.

Have you sold the opti’s? If not I would be interested in one of them.

iaoutlaw 07-09-2020 09:04 AM

No joke there rak rua. As shown in the previous post the nav lights weren't hooked up so we thought it'd be an easy fix. Not so much. we tested the line and there was voltage there so we went ahead and hooked the lights up but they wouldn't turn on. so we thought that the lights might be bad lets test for voltage at the LED's. When we took the caps off we noticed that the red wire was connected to the negative terminal on the pcb and the back was connected to the positive terminal on the pcb so we unsoldered them switched the wires and soldered them back on and still no light (LED's have to be wired correctly to work). Next step clip the wires and test the light on a battery. Turns out the lights work off the battery so pcb was marked wrong so we had to undo all our work. Next we ran new wire installed and hooked everything back up and Finally we have navigation lights!! once that was done we tried to pull the old wire and it was so corroded that it just snapped every time we tried so we just left it. During this whole ordeal we discovered a hose with a fitting on the end of it just dangling between the inner and outer hull. After we got the nav lights figured out we discovered that it was the vent tube for the forward gas tank. Again the boat is 20 years old stuff is worn out I'm ok with that. What I'm not ok with is that the thru hull vent had been replaced to make it look pretty from the outside but they just left the vent hose connected to the old thru hull. Everytime you filled that tank all the fumes were spilling into the bilge. One spark from a bad wire(Take your pick every wire in this boat has to be replaced) and the entire boat explodes.

What a job! I admire your courage. Very informative post for those "attempting this at home"...

Helmwurst 07-09-2020 12:21 PM

Would it be worth trying Salt Away wash on the wiring and the tidy up the bad connections. Rewiring that will take some time and effort. I see a lot of green corrosion on some of the water fitting. Every indication of galvanic corrosion. Ugh.... It will be nice when done though. Good luck.

iaoutlaw 07-10-2020 11:52 AM

Helmwurst- we did try cleaning up the connections a bit but since we are planning on keeping the boat for quite awhile and it will live on a lift at LOTO it makes sense to just go ahead and replace everything while we have the ability to do so. I am ready for it to be done and actually enjoy this thing.
Taking a break from all the wiring issues I started to work on the dash. With the old glove box in pieces we decided to cut a new backing plate that would support new MFD displays and give us a clean sheet to work with. I used a scrap piece of 3/4" plywood to mock up the backing plate and get all the coners and angles close before we cut the plastic backing board. This process worked pretty well and gave us a nice flat surface to mount the metal face plate to.

More boxes!! Vessel View, Vessel View Link, Can bus, Engine harness, Controls, Fuel Sender cables, Power steering actuators, on and on and on. Basically we're going to have all brand new rigging in this boat which is nice considering the condition of the original equipment. The downside of going all brand new is dimensions of the new stuff is much smaller than original so some glass work will be needed for support.

Now that we have the helm, throttles, vesselview, and fusion head unit we can get the mid and lower dash panels cut.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b07e0f283.jpeg
Vesselview Link on the left, NMEA 2000 backbone on the top right. Nice that all of this is accessible thru the center council cabin so the dash won’t have to come off to work on something or add to the NMEA network.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5ce47f9cd.jpeg
The new throttles have a much smaller footprint since it’s only 4 wiring harness to connect versus 3 shift cables and 3 throttle cables. We cut a square out of 3/4 marine grade plywood then glassed it in the old cutout.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0a8495577.jpeg
The bottom side of the dash. Used painters tape to contain the fiberglass resin.

Today’s update some glass and gel work.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a601cd019.jpeg
Holes where the oil fills use to be, the center hydraulic thru hull(Triple Verado setup just uses 2 steering actuators and uses the tie bar to turn the center engine), and small screw holes that held the ladder will get glassed **** then covered with gelcoat.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...15e2aee9d.jpeg
First layer of glass in where the oil fill used to be. The thru hull is next to come out.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6b5a8ce86.jpeg
Layer 4 or 5 of glass in both the oil fills and the hydraulic thru hull location. It’s built up enough that we are able to start sanding the high spots down.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...77a523120.jpeg
Glass work is done and sanded smooth... now time to put gelcoat over it.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e451699af.jpeg
Transom corners had stress cracks from where the top cap met the hull so we ground them out and reglassed it.

Thanks guys, it’s been a ton of work and learning curve but it’ll be worth it in the end.
We got the Power steering lines hooked up to the helm, shower bilge pump put back together, engine harness run & hooked up to the CCM’s as well as all the wiring harness from the CCM’s to the dash. Also the 4th battery placement and power steering pump location figured out.

Monday update:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1636e5ffd.jpeg
Finally got the Steering wheel Off the old hub and put on the new one.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...18adf93b6.jpeg
My workspace for the past week.. few things to tidy up but everything is hooked up and in place. Once you get down here there actually is quite a bit of room now that the oil tanks are in it. You can also see the support system that transfers the load from the inner transom down to the hull. (There is a solid tube between the inner and outer transom walls as well as a steel plate on the outside of the transom that the motors bolt to.)
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...71297d99e.jpeg
Only thing left is to hook up the hi pressure line from the pump to the helm.(waiting on a fitting to arrive)

We had a left over strip of green LED’s from Phil’R Up so we hooked them up and put them on the bottom side of the floor in case we ever need to check something out down there we have some light.

Today’s update: Gelcoat

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4ffaf3a62.jpeg
Corner is almost done just needs a good buffing.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...befc66b60.jpeg
Backside of the seat needs 1 more layer of gel and a good polishing
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...308437ef4.jpeg
Thru hulls have been scuffed and the one thru hull has been filled.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c5774b49f.jpeg
Same goes for the port side thru hull vents.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5a96f7ee3.jpeg
Sides are finally shiny!!!
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...cff163b5d.jpeg
Hardest part of painting is the prep work.. spent a good hour taping everything off and 15 mins to spray a primer and 2 coats of paint.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9d0af85ae.jpeg
Nice to finally start checking things off on our todo list.

Little teaser for Motor Monday

Rear Seat

Two things this boat is lacking is plenty of seating and cup holders. The cup holders we’re going to have to get creative on but the rear seat has a fairly simple solution. In my earlier post I showed a cardboard cutout of a bench seat(First Pic below). There are existing brackets for 2 jump seats on the back wall but those didn’t come with the boat so we decided to make our own seat that slides into those brackets. It’s only a temporary solution to get us thru this year but it adds 3 seats and was cheap to make.

Concept out of cardboard
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c219a9a44.jpeg
Not the prettiest by far but it was cheap. Had to buy the vinyl and the foam batting which was about $90 but the wood and paint was all stuff I had laying around
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b4aebe684.jpeg
The top actually looks fairly good.. Not bad in my opinion for my first attempt at upholstery anyway.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b6ff87ded.jpeg
It doesn’t look great compared to the nicely stitched upholstery that’s in the boat but it adds 3 seats to get us thru this boating season. There are big plans for this area but that won’t come until early next year.

Motor monday

Today's update is a little different. I got a few requests to make a video so I thought I'd give it a shot. I was a little tired when I recorded it so forgive my rambling. Also forgot to shoot in landscape mode. It looked good when I was recording it but as soon as I uploaded I realized I should have flipped the phone.

I agree on the seat upgrade, that’s what turned me off those boats.

iaoutlaw 08-10-2020 10:31 AM

The 2nd idea that I teased in a earlier post is the swim platform. I'm happy to say that it is done!! Having the extra space to walk around the engines makes it so much easier to get off and on the boat. The only downside is we’re going to have to be extra careful around the docks so we don’t smash the platform.

FantaSea finally saw daylight yesterday!! We had a little delay and some extra work todo to get to this point but it was good feeling getting her cleaned up.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6dc6d1b3f.jpeg
End that was on the hose we got didn’t work with the pump we have so we ordered a new line.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b1c94addf.jpeg
Had to take the helm apart to swap out the lines
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a87377847.jpeg
Due to the derecho we didn’t have power at the shop so I had to use the green LED’s for light. Pump is hooked up the the new line. Just need to bleed the system.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e230546ff.jpeg
The other issue was a leaking prop shaft seal. We had pulled the lower and dropped it and the seal kit off at our local marina to do the work but that changed due to the storm as well. The marina still doesn’t have power and has a lot of damage to their docks so we picked everything back up and replaced the seals ourselves.

Lower is back together with new seals in it!
