remote oiling for bravo 1
Been getting my outdrives ready and was wondering, how can you make sure the remote oiling bottle is actually working. I see elect. wires going to the bottle and assume its some type of selenoid. Looked in the book at wire schem. and it shows that a wire is supposed to go to a temp sending unit on block??? Am I reading that right? Thanks for any help, was just wondering......................................... ...

the wires are for the low oil warning system that ties into water temp and low oil pressure, it needs to be tied into the blue with brown strip wire in your engine wiring harness, the other wire need to be grounded. you do not need to hook it up it just sounds the buzzer under the dash.

I have to remove, empty and clean my drive bottles every yr to get the sludge off the bottle bottom. Don't know what causes it as the drive lube is changed every yr and there is no water in the drives. The sludge could get thick enough to hold the float up from sounding the alarm if it where to get low on oil.

I noticed this also. Was sludge and funk in bottom of the bottles. But how does it work?

The resevoir is just that...holds fluid until it's needed. If you notice the level going down, something is wrong (assuming you've given it some time after a fluid change). Drive fluid doesn't actually circulate. If your warning buzzer(s) go off but water temp and oil pressure look good, check the level in the drive resevoirs.

The bottle is just a resevoir
As the oil in the drive heats and expands, it will push some back into the bottle. That is what breaks down into slug or it is just the lube breaking down in the bottle. |
I have noticed that mercruiser quicksilver brive lube has a additive in it that has a tendency to sludge up in the resevore, its a friction modifier or stablizer. I have gone to lucas gear oils in my drive and have no sludge issues. amsoil extreme gear and alisen are products I have heard good things about.

There is a float switch in the bottle that will close contacts when the fluid level gets to that point. This will supply a ground or 12v (not sure which) to the alarm horn. There are several other switches that are wired in parallel that will sound the horn when problems arise. That is the basis for the bottle alarm.. Hope this helps. Dick |
