3" shorty with stock XR upper?

I'm looking at trying a shorty on my 26 Outlaw w/600sci XR.

Looks like 3" may have clearance issue with stock XR
What's the scoop?

Is 2" all you can do with stock upper?

-2 is all you get .......until you go to a special upper IMCO case that is built for the -3 shorty....
