Question Blown motor, do I still winterize outdrives?

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum, and boating also. I just bought a Chris Craft 210 for a winter project that has a blown up 305 in it. I was woundering if the outdrives need winterized still, I have been told by someone around here that they dont because the water runs out or them. I was still wanting to get input from other's that have to winterize and see if they ever had this situation before. Any info would be great since I am not wanting to have to get a outdrive in the spring also, Thanks

if its an alpha drive, water can be caught in the water pump in the lower gear housing. Best to just pull the drive off and store it some place warm for the winter.

It is also wise to replace the gear lube to ensure no water is in the case that mixed with the oil.. Jamie

I always recommend removing the drives... If you have a cracked bellows now is the time to find out... Since it's an Alpha it's an ideal time to replace the shift cable if the shaft seals are bad because the shift cable will seize up over the winter.

then you have the U-joints, they should be greased. then you have the seals.. If the drives sits on the boat all winter in frigid temps the propshaft seals harden and can crack... then of course theres the drive lube which should always be changed before the winter... god forbid you had a bad seal and the oil is milky, that water filled oil will sit in the drive all winter.

Short answer, yes, winterize it regardless!

Thanks everyone, I guess I will be removing an outdrive this week sometime and storing it in the gameroom. It was going to come off anyways, just a little sooner now, since the boat is getting a color change before next boating season anyways. Thanks again for the help and I'm sure you'll be seeing ?'s from me again.
