Konrad Drives
Whats the price on these drives? How much work is it to convert from TRS to Konrads?
|
About 10K. They advertise you can do the conversion in 1 day.
|
Don't do it, just had my drive repaired from Konrad FIFTY HOURS on them and $6000 to repair. They don't know why it broke and it was VERY rare that it broke. I had to also pull the motor out to repair my tranny it bent the splines in it when the drive let go.

I thought my drives were bullit proof too? That was the price to repair one drive. I'm hoping the other one doesn't go as well, they don't know why it failed so it leaves thinking what about the other? I'm running 800 hp through them and never beat on it so I wonder what horsepower they really do handle???????????????????????????????

That makes sense. Warrantee is warantee! What is it with people that expect the warrantee to go beyond the warrantee!! I see it if is 30 days or so.....MAYBE, but twice the warantee? Konrad is an awesome drive. I've spent nearly $6K to repair a Merc XR |

Kurt is a good guy, I'm not asking him for anything. Konrad on the other hand, I feel should of worked with me a little better being that they don't know why my drive broke?
|
Joe,
I agree with you that Konrad could have done something more for you other than what appears to be list price. They market their drive to support this level of HP/TQ. With a twin set up, modified Bravos will live at 800 HP, mine do. Konrad, you make a great product that fills a market void. Would it make business sense to reconsider your response? Mercury, GM, Ford all make warrantee exceptions in some situations, is this one of them? Ben |
Hey Joe
Did you have the heavy duty upper gear set? Just curious...I got them when i bought my Konrads so just wanted to be aware of what i might be in store for. Thanks Brian |

They have guys running more HP then this and less HP then this and so far I think the results have been fairly favorable from what I have read. Anyone know what the service intervals are on a number 6 drive? |
You can replace a xr drive for 6k easy! I was going to order a set of conrads for my boat but i DEFINATELY WONT NOW!! Besides they eat up alot of horsepower! Stick with the TRS!
|
Or Man Up & Go To A #6!!!
|
ive had konrad drives on my cigarette behind 800 horse blower motors now with out a single problem replaced #3a drives highly recommend these drives. our sport is very demanding we all know that you can break any drive any time it goes with the sport. maybe konrad could of been flexable on the price for good will agreed but there is to many unknow factors ie knowing how to throttle for one. two sides to every story and then the truth.rjs38topgun

Konrad did wind up giving me a break they took off $500. I asked them if they would split the difference and this is what they did for me. The fifty hours on them half of them are just idle time, I had idling issues last year and Kurt can attest to it he drove my boat last Fall. I will sell the boat this season and go back to Bravos that way Konrad can't stick it to me again. Who ever buys there drives think twice about it because there the only ones who can fix them.
|
Konrad has an will always support the product. Thye are the most stright and stand up people I have ever delt with in this industry.
Did you go through a dealer for the repairs? Typically there is a disount when using a dealer or distributor. Its like buying direct from a manufacturer, its rarely cheaper than biuying through a distributor or dealer. Do you know why the drive broke? Whats the HP, what were the conditions? How often do you change gear oil? How often do you insepct the drive? I'm not pointing fingers, but how do you expect a company to warranty, or repair something that is two years old on a performance boat? Bravo XRs cost close to that if you take out all the gears and bearings and replace them with Merc parts. Konrad didnt stick it to you. Sorry to hear you broke something, but slamming them is not the right response. |
So Kurt came down from Konrad and worked with you on set up? How much did they charge you for that? What did you find was the problem when he came down? I doubt you could ever get Merc to come over to take a look at your boat.
|
Iam running 800hp through my drives and changed the gear oil on it twice, once after break in and in the beginning of this season. The reason why Iam slamming them is because now I have invested close to 30k in drives on a 12 meter Fountain.

|
Breaking does suck, also broke drive plate, and repairing tranny got to love boating!

The 3 a is defenatley stronger then a Konrad,,,its a longer #5. The Konrad is a upgraded TRS ( same chit ,just newer ) max HP 650-700 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sombody proof me wrong with a real test result,,,i know they can take more on a light use. But what really is the tested rating on a Konrad ?????????????? NOT KONRAD TESTING !!!! Its like engineparts where the katalog says ,,,this head +20 HP ,,,this intake +15 HP and so on,,,by the time your done u get a 1000 HP N/A smallblock on 87 octane and 9:1 compression ,,,,if u believe that , the Konrad is for u .LOL |
DareDevil go do some research on what a 3A is rated for and parts availability then you can come back and edit your post.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I have new prop shafts , upper housings, the bearings u can buy anywhere,,,i have new gears ......allot of used stuff also, also i have like 8 used ones ,,completley freshend up. #4's same thing,,,or #5. If i don't have it ,,i know who does. So now,,,do u whant to edit your post ?! PS.: just because the merc website says NLA ,,,does not mean u can't buy it anymore. U know somebody had to build that for merc. U just can't buy it from merc. THATS THE LESSON FOR TODAY !!! |
No the lesson for today is that none of us knows how Joe Cool runs his boat in terms of trim or coming out of the hole, etc. I do know that I went to Konrad and built a drive and saw how thorough the staff is when it comes to attention to details. I've also seen Kurt hammer on his drives on the local lakes for the last six seasons and never seen them fail.
|
Konrads have worked quite well for Brian Bunch, Fountain of Youth Racing. They are rated for 800hp and parts are available from the factory. I also like the fact that you can use standard props on them not high dollar Speedmaster style props. If I had the money, I'd still convert my boat even after hearing about this failure. Joetool, sorry to hear about your problem.
|
Ok,,,big bravo spline prop shaft. Agree u can use Bravo props.
Let me see u do that on your 43 BT with 800 HP ,,,failure 100%. The fountain of youth ( RACEBOAT ) is way lighter then most plessure boats. Everybody says rated @ 800 !!!! By whom ?????? It is nothing else then a new style TRS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS FACT. Better then reg. Bravo ,,yes,,,newer then TRS and still getting parts ,,yes. comparable to a speedmaster #3,3'a,4.or 5 ABSOLUTLEY NOT !!!!!!!!! Same with B-max ,,they say its better then any Bravo,,,,the upper yes,but the rest is still a bravo. Now the ace drive from konrad ( bravo conversion ) yep,,thats a good product,,the 520 and 540 is a TRS replacment,,,nothing more. Trs was rated @ ~600 maybe the konrad with newer style downshafts is ~ 650 REAL HP ,,thats it. #3 is 700, #4 is 750, #3'a and 5 is 800 REAL HP RATING !!!! Can u stick a XR ( Bravo ) on a 1000HP engine ??? , absolutley if u take it easy and know what your doing the thing will live,,,does it make sense ? ,,NO !!! Get real people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Thanks to all it's been very interesting.
|
The moral of the story is IM STICKING WITH MERCURY!! F**K that aftermarket junk!!

The Ace drive IS a 540 with a stand off box to house the tranny. So I guess that the Konrad drive is good after all. Have you ever seen the inside of a Konrad? To say that it is the same as a TRS shows you have no idea what you are talking about. How does Merc come up with their drive specs? How do you think Konrad does? It is not some arbatrary number that they came up with from thin air.
TRS/KONRAD is the same thing,,,,,just a newer housing and look. SLOW & OUT DATED !!!! The SSM drives #3,4,3'a and 5 maybe out dated ,,,but still better and stronger then a konrad. The nice thing about a konrad is if u have/had a TRS its a perfect fit replacement,,,,altough i think its cheaper and better to replace with a XR or IMCO !!!!!! If u have a SSM its the best to leave it. So how did they come up with the HP rating #'s ??????? Show us !!!!!!!!!! I never said its a bad drive,,,i just said its crazy money for what u get !!! If u like them .....fine , more power to u !! But a used Konrad is what 10 K ????? I can get 2 # 5's or ~8 TRS or 4 XR's for that + with XR's i garantie u the boat is ~10MPH faster and about 400 pounds lighter in the stern !,,,see my point !!! And thats used !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U know ,,,i run 806 DYNOED HP in my boat ,with a tranny on a #4 big shaft. How about we do a test ?????? U give me a Konrad with all the bells and wisles, and after i showed u that i slowed the boat down ~ 6-8 MPH and after i blew it up (racing like i do now ) i give it back to u and then we talk. And please don't tell me i have 6 HP to much !? |

I will take Dollars word for it thanks. They loved the 3a to Konrad conversion and said it was a huge success, as did a person earlier in the thread that actually did it. But hey what do they know, certainly not as much as you, some one who has obviously never seen the drive or knows what is in it..
And you are correct ,,what do i know .LOL U know i had people telling me jumping out of an airplane is cool and they liked it,,,would i do it ? NO ,,but what do i know. :grinser010: By the way ,,,i am willing to learn,,,show me pictures of the parts ( TRS / Konrad ) !! Later |
I will get them next time I have time. I am not saying stronger but you indicate the same strength they according to you are both rated for 800 hp! Bearings are way larger, shafts all larger, case is thicker and more ridged, better oiling system, larger universals, better transom assembly......
Like I said of the many many many drives that they have sold they have very few failures. I have seen Kurt run his to the matt for LONG stretches in rough water and he is running 750 hp and has never blown a drive. There are aplications out there with well over 1000hp hooked up to these things. I know of a new aplications from a board memeber that will be almost 1300hp, it will be interesting to see how it goes with that. There are peole blowing up #3's, #4's and even #6 drives all the time, does that make them bad drives? How often has Mercury offered to come and drive your boat to help set it up? Konrad went to this guys house and helped him out with his boat, seems like very good customer service to me. |
