who has broke a scx imco drive?

Would a #6 drive be the answer? I always read the posts about drive breakage and pushing them to the limits. A drive rated for 900 horsepower sitting behind 1200 horsepower? The basics of this confuse me if you are 25% passed the rated hp...does design dictate max ability even with upgrades? Don't flame me...just curious if a #6 drive is the answer? I am no expert and don't claim to be 1.

Geeter- there are a few reasons why this isnt usually feasible, and a couple that make it impractical if not unfeasible.
1. the mammoth #6 requires a separate transmission vs. a built in one and most boats simply do not have the room to accommodate a 6 even if you had issues 2& 3 covered.
2. As airpacker said - ...heavy.. think of the weight of a collapsing star hanging off the back of your transom.
3. The price tag is absolutely astonishing even for the performance boat crowd.. We're talking second mortgage, 401K busting, I didnt go to college so why should my kids- expensive.
4. Its gears are so massive it eats power like a puppy on the morning paper - For what its worth the Xpower guy (Bill Auberlen) claims he dynod it and that the # 6 takes between 90 & 100 HP to spin 5500 RPM. Roughly twice the loss of an XR.

Your right it was not easy but I am completely satisfied in our parting of ways. The SCX will be figured out--- I must be cursed everytime I try and get away from the SC/Max Machine Worx Drive I end up right back to that trusty drive.
Honestly, I can break any built Bravo style drive on command. I laugh at all the people that say Yeah bro I run 900+HP through a stock XR and it has 180Hrs on it! Oh and yeah I beat on it all the time---- gimme a break---if thats the case go play the lotto or powerball call me when you win
.
As for whether your drive lives or not I do not have a crystal ball but if I were gonna handicap you I would say right at about 80 hours your gonna get a sound you will not like. That also depends on how much you drive at your peak HP/Torque. If your driving the boat like Miss. Daisy it will live longer if you drive it like you stole it then the life span will be much shorter. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise it is not the HP that will 0kill it---it is the driver, torque and a combination of both that makes you bust out your checkbook.
Lower units grenade when you do jack rabbit starts and hard out of the hole or fly the boat. Uppers break when you put the torque to them real fast in roll on type conditions shear a tooth or break it free from the spun welded base. NOTE: This is my experience and is not intended to reflect anyone else's war story
just a general statement.
I hope to see you at Havasu we will be attending the Absolute Speed and Marine Poker Run. FYI---it is a great poker run you should come out---real cool bunch of performance boaters with down to earth demeanors.
KAP
P.S. Uncle Dave you better be make it to this Poker Run no excuses you will love the group and it will be a fun time I will do the intro's for you
. There might even be a Lavey contingency this year again.

You put alot of effort and greenback into that conversion and it sounded as though you were realitivly happy with the drive at the end.

Well how about doing intro's next time. I think you know our boat name is Miss Silver Bullet come and say hello.
This thread is getting me worried. This winter I upgraded to an SCX upper, kept my SC lower. I havent run it yet. Plan to, this weekend. I cant lean into it for a while. I have a fresh engine as well as the new SCX. If I see a speed loss, I may just tie an anchor around my neck and jump in the ocean!! The worse part is that I sold my SC upper and Imco helmet for the SC. Now I have nothing to compare to, if there is a speed loss.
BTW.. You guys swapping from an SC to an SCX in the same day are handling alot of work. Considering you have to swap the helmet , as well as swapping uppers.
I am not running big power, only about 750 or so. Maybe as KAP is thinking, I am not to the point where I am pushing the drive enough to show a speed loss? Time will tell..

I cannot tell you how fortunate I was when I did not sell my SC/Max drive. As for swapping out the helmet and upper yeah it is a pain in the ass but relatively quick if you have all the right tools. If I go back to the SC helmet I am not going to change it back for a loooong time I will just pay the piper when it comes to gear sets.
I have a 26 Mach with a 900hp 572 Bravo 1XR 1:50. I bought the boat in Nov. and have only put about 4 hrs on it. I followed your Xpower thread and was waiting to hear more about it after the shootout.

Yeah, I put my heart, soul and wallet into making that combination work and it was very successful
. Unfortunately, those that wanted more information should have contacted me directly before I parted ways versus months after the fact.
I hope to finalize this SCX/SC issue I mean it is not rocket science it's a damn drive. I can figure it out and once that happens I want to put the boat into pump gas mode. We will then just cruise---do a few poker runs and be comfortable knowing the drive is going to last more than 25-45 hours.
FYI---the IMCO people are very supportive and want to resolve this issue. It is my opinion once this issue is resolved they will have a better understanding of their product at the upper levels of the HP/Torque range and make adjustments as needed.
I just wish I could have a turn key product that worked for once rather than putting in time, effort and R&D. The X-Power journey kinda cured me of that desire.
I'll know more in about a week when we collaborate on this issue with the IMCO people.

After reading what everyone is going through with these "Bravo Drives" I'd say the Arnesons are very affordable and at least there is a payback with them rather than just a loss waiting to happen.

Roger that! If I'm not mistaken $5k more will buy a twin Arneson compared to a twin SCX. Correct? Close? A mile away?

Kap,
To bad you had to crap can the x-drive. I am sure that was not easy,(both mentally or money wise). Hope you get the scx dialed in. I boat ALOT in Havasu, hope to see you there! On another note I run a heavy deep vee 28' with about 800 HP. New, (30 hours) Teague XR with all the good stuff,(Mario Latkas drive guy built it). I have changed the Amsoil twice and both times oil was beautiful. I am easy on the thottle , but will that drive just brake or will it give warning signs, like metal in oil??
Thanks, dave
