The gears rarely line up exactly. The newer gears have an double line on the + side to allow for a bit of tolerance.
The ramp on the brass ring is very gentle so it doesn't have to be perfect. If you push the pinion gear in and they misalign a bit, you can spin the driven gears around to the other side and they usually will line up. The manual pics were made up back in the old days, and since then they have changed the markings on the gears. Not to worry. They look great where they are.
