Does anyone have more knowledge of the strength of this drive and has anyone run some good horsepower on them. What kind of speeds? I know the bat boats used these drives with great success.Thanks

Yep.. Good drive. It was kind of like VP's answer to merc's black hawk, although they were not quite as short. They held power fairly well & performed well. They were offered with an integrated Hydraulic steering.

The current problem though is the expense now if you need to replace one. They are disconitnued now for some time @ VP. So whatever is left in stock at volvo, or what ever internals cross over to VP's other drives you can get. Otherwise it is gonna be a challenge. The other issue is they were a pricey drive to begin with..

Thanks Lakeside, They seem to be a very solid drive, with the built in hydraulic steering stabilizers. Have been reading nothing good about them. The only downfall is they have been dis-continued and pricey.

Do yo think they are capable of hanlding speeds in the upper 90's

I don't see why not. They used to couple some of them to some stout Innovation marine stuff many moons ago. I don't recall the actual speed #'s on them, but some of the Scarabs & Formulas that I know they ended up in did rather well with them.. ;) J

we sold a couple of 33AVS's with 600 DPX's.......ran in low 90s
we also sold some in 38 AVS (not a light boat)....ran great and in the low 80's

how do you think it will hold out in a 30' campion chase v hull Apex hull. with a single 598cu.in whipple dyno'd at around 968.2 hp at 8psi.:grinser010: boat weighs 5800lbs dry weight

Not sure.....

That kind of power will give it a good test.. I dont know of any that were behind something that stout.. Most of the stuff I know of was behind 600 hp or less..

I would say the DPX is easily as strong as a B1 and built better too. But it is not a SSM, Konrad or a Arneson..

If you are going to beat on it, you would be better off with something built to handle a little more abuse..

So, yes easing into that kind of power with the sticks would be highly advised, but it is solid advice for any set up. I find the better you take care of something, usually the better it takes care of you.. ;)
