Default OMC Stringer sudden loss of reverse

Guys, I took my boat out Memorial day, she has an OMC Stringer 800 hydraulic shift. I had reverse when I back the boat up to leave the marina, cruised at 35mph (3500rpm) for about 25min in 60ish degree water, rolled into the next marina and went to engage reverse, it ground and wouldn't go in?

Pull the drain plug on the lower unit. See if there is metal from the gears on the magnet. Or it could be full of water.

Forgot to mention, the engagement point on the shifter went way far back when I lost reverse. Like probably an inch past normal neutral. And I talking about you have to pull the shift lever all the way back past normal neutral into reverse territory to get it to shift out of drive. It shifts quickly and well into drive

A local mechanic thought it was shift cable adj. The boat is sold.
