Too high depends on the boat, and also what propeller you are running. A lot of the old straight hulls won't react well to high x-dim because of the loss of bow lift. I think for most of the straight hulls, the practical limit is probably propshaft 1"-2" below the hull bottom, while some of the newer stepped bottoms are 1"-2" above.

Well I am running a 98 27 Fountain with a stepped hull. How much speed do you really gain? Is it really worth the money?

tcelano has a very good point. I put a -2 IMCO shorty on my Baja 26 Outlaw (straight bottom boat). Even though it would still get on plane easily I lost bow lift and thus speed. I just put in a 1" spacer which helps, but I think I would be better off with full length on this boat.

My friend is running a 2 in shorty and not getting the speed he and I expect in his 25 OL. I have been suspicious on a lack of bow lift.

I have 2 1" bravo spacers, one stock and one modified to work with a upper with the max worx tower, I don't have a problem letting wayne try one if he needs. I hope to met up with him and let him try the Greg Hittner/cutting edge labbed 28 that I have as I personally think his stock 28 is hurting him vs labbed, Smitty

Can you do a 2" spacer? I would imagine IMCO would be a better lower than the stock Bravo.

I put the 2" shorty on ours but I also have it set up with the IMCO E-box. Still prop testing so I do not have anything to compare it to yet.

Also, what about cupping your prop?
