If the serial number begins with OL or earlier, you could have punched the floor out of the fwd gear. If SN begins with OM or newer.. then it could be worse.. With the drive removed, turn the input shaft by hand, if you feel any binding or grinding.. well time to pull the top and back caps. If things are broken inside, you should see metal on the magnet.
Also spin the propshaft.. see if you feel any binding..

Let us know what you find. Advise will come from the results..
Hope that helps.

Every time my upper has broken there was nothing on the magnet. Come to think of it, the magnet had magically disappeared

well after pulling everything down i found that the prop shaft has completely sheared off in the front of the lower unit...had to take it to mechanic because i dont have a puller but i watched them do it...the shaft has twisted out of the gear and we had to pull the gear out and beat the rest of the broken splines out...shaft is 700 dollars unless anyone else knows a cheaper site or better idea haha

drive is fairly new but who knows...around here the rive is always flooding and washing crap into the lake...prop and skeg have no dings or bruises but it may have hit ground...im really glad im not having to pull the motor but cost is about the same...im guessing around 1000 to rebuild but i may just buy a new one...we will see

Might be money ahead.

I had the same thing happen to one of mine a couple years ago......about a month after that, the vertical shaft broke.
