That looks good. Are there holes that have to be drilled on the sides?

Pulling most boat motors is a piece of cake .
I wasn't gonna say anything, but I have to agree, In my opinion its a hack job to do that to the housing. Spend the extra dollars and do the job right.

Replacing the inner was a different story. I used some Detroit engineering and a sissor jack from my SVT Focus to jack the engine up enough to remove the inner bracket. I used blocks of wood to support the engine while I was working in and around the engine. A big PIA but it's done.

I'm sure that was a pia ,Your boat must not have a y pipe

I don't understand the hack comments with the JR method. If you buy an IMCO transom assembly brand new, they are smart enough to have a removable access plate right from the start instead of making gimbal ring maintenance a nightmare like Mercury. Which is more consumer friendly? Seems pretty obvious to me.

I might be a little better with it, if merc had a removable access plate instead of cheesy pipe plugs through a thick casting that customer or shop drills .With the hole you drill for the merc "fix" it is a PITA to work the nut, stack the parts and do it right. How about steering bushings and seal ...Much less once done (on merc oem) it looks like crap .If you want to drill your plates ,do it ....I don't and won't/.
I'd rather pull the motor and plates. When done you can't tell it happened ...Except now there is no slop

I agree, Mercury method sucks and is really ugly. I am plenty happy with JR kit.

Sorry to say ..I just watched the JR video ...Not impressed .When you said merc sux ,go JR I watched To see what was different /.Now I see ,,,you drill a bunch of little holes .Then saw and grind with all that aluminum shaving going into steering cavity. Then a cheesy four hole rectangular plate to make it purty ...Sorry chief ,I don't bite on your friends "fix"

He is not my friend, "chief". Call it what you want, but pulling an engine for a simple repair is a waste of resources for most of us. I wasn't looking for an argument, so you don't have to be an azzhole.

Sorry for the attitude. That was last night with a couple cold ones in me. But I still say ,I don't want the holes cut in my stuff .If you do and did ,cool .With as many 3/32 holes as was drilled ,I can probably have my engine on the floor before a typical person is finished drilling the holes. By the time most are done cutting and grinding, the transom assembly will be out .Then i go to the bench where it is far quicker to install ring .An added benefit of pulling the plates is to replace the exhaust and transom seals. Plus i get to make my engine room squeaky clean.
I can see how the JR method may be the thing for those without a lift .I have done them the old merc "fix" way and find it a pain.I find it far less aggravating and a nicer job to just get the motor out of the way. My Opinion and sorry to get you worked up. This is one of the few sites where there isn't a lot of argument and name calling ,and i'm not looking to start any.
BTW. I learned the term "chief" while living in New England years ago. Not really meant to be derogatory.....just a word ...like "captain"

How much play left to right should there be with the outdrive? Does it matter if the outdrive is up or should it be down? I took a picture that I would like to post but can't figure how to do it with my phone.

Thanks again for everyone's help.
