Default Grenaded a TRS, Possible Causes?

Was going across the lake today about 70 and grenaded a drive. The water was calm and we were just cruising. Any idea what would cause this? The gears looked fine the beginning of the season and she only has 20 hours on her this year. Trying to understand why it broke the carrier cap, was it from vibration or did the shaft move?

I haven't pulled the drive yet so just wondering initial thoughts....

Had the exact same thing happen to a trs. Blew the upper and busted the rear cover. Never knew why that happened. Usually the RH lower is what lets go from too much power. But the upper? Idk, low fluid level ?

The lube level looks slightly low but it's still above the bottom on he pinion gear.

That drive looks old and the gear lube looks black. When was it changed last?

Could be plain old fatigue.

Fluid was changed this spring, drive is old but was checked in the spring and looked okay. Fluid level was okay except for what leaked out from the broken front cap!

Strange!
