I like the Idea of crash boxes but think they would be a pain in the cack with the type of boating we do.

I have Huber 1200's. Never a trans problem. Well once a plug fell out and ran out of fluid, but that doesn't count. I have many friends running hubers, bams, with big power and good luck.

exactly, if transmissions were an issue the big power drives would not use them....

The tranny's really don't rob as much power as one thinks as well. Plus the shifting is silky smooth.

Love my Crash Boxes! :boat:

But there are PLENTY of transmission guys around the country that can economically make most transmissions hold up better then any bravo drives cone clutch

Crash Boxes Only way I will go. Never drove my boat without them good way to learn. And no scratches from the dock. But I did install 24v starters. LOL

For the 4 vs 5 confusion, the easiest way to tell is the size of the pin that goes through the trim cylinders. 4s are 7/8" and 5s are 1". All the parts will fit in either case though. I was so confused when I bought mine

The cases, upper and lower, for the #4 and the #5 SSM drives are not the same and the parts from a #4 and a #5 will NOT interchange.

can someone explain what are crashboxes and how they work? pros and cons to those?
thanks!

Crash box you have a neutral fwd and rev. You half to start in gear and shut it off to put in neutral fwd and reverse. Its tricky around the dock. But the benefit is they almost never brake and no maintenance.
Some of the SCS Crash boxes have a air operated clutch to shift.

There is absolutely no way in hell, that a SSM III, should be rated below and XR sportmaster!. Or a KAAMA better than a 3A, 4, 5....I'll give my ranking list lol

#1 Arneson
#2 M8
#3 SSM 6 dry sump
#4 SSM 6 wet sump
#5 SSM 3A/5
#6 SSM 4
#7 SSM 3
#8 Konrad
#9 Kaama
#10 Bravo XR Sportmaster
#11 TRS/SSM II
#12 Standard Bravo
#13 Alpha

Just my opinion!

It's the SSMII that he rated under the XR not the SSMIII
