Thank you, the information is good!
I use the term "Pre-Alpha" as a descriptive term, that encompasses 4-6 models that were make prior to the Alpha Units. Most people don't know what you are talking about when you give them the older numbers, nor do I honestly know which model I own (yet). You stated that mine is an MC-1. not to be stupid (but I am truly ignorant as this is a new area to me) how do you know...better yet How would I know?? what are the earmarks? In your situation...honestly I would try to find a pair of Alpha !'s from anything after 1984 and plug them in to your Transom Assemblies with new U-Joint Bellows and Shift Cable Bellows. I've seen good ones selling for around $500. Read all that you can online about these drives...they have been around for decades and there are millions of them all over the country. Any boat yard you go to in South Carolina is going to have some laying around. |
I find no numbers on the older units (on my boat)
On the newer ALPHA: The number looks to read: OD651968 |
the Boat Place here says this should be a 1991 RH 1.50:1
|
So turn the upper shaft and count propshaft turns. That is a 1.5 to 1 reduction.

Owner said it was an 1989 small block V-8 Ratio: 1:84 , but I do not have proof The ratios are,..... 1.98:1 for the GM I-4 motors,.... 1.84:1 for the ole GM I-6s, 'n the ole Merc 470s, 'n the GM V-6s, in huge heavy hulls,..... 1.65:1 for the GM V-6s, 'n V-8s in huge heavy hulls,.... 1.50:1 for everyday V-8 applications,.... |

I figure it was the last of the line before the Gen2 came out... you tell me. I assure you, you have far superior knowledge to mine. |

Amongst all the other suggestions, if you are doing bellows etc while its off, do yourself a favor and do the shift cable too. Alpha's and prealphas LOVE new shift cables and it keeps you from looking like a douche around the docks.
