Were the DG failures covered under warranty?

I still broke shafts, gears, drives.Come to find out the original ones were not calibrated right and one of them wasn`t even releasing like it should . .....

I pulled an engine and took it to the dyno (that`s not as easy as it sounds) which i didn`t need to do, did it specifically to find out where we needed to set them up at so they would not burn out .
Had to pull the engine again when it broke a second time .... this time I said **** this piece of **** and just bought all new flywheel and coupler.
I lost a weekend at LOTO (7 hours away) when the first one burned out , I lost a second weekend in Chicago when the second one burned out . lost 2 more weekend pulling them out , lost 2 other weekends putting them back in .. lost a few days getting them back and forth to dyno, lost another couple days taking the bellhousings apart etc etc , you get the point. Total waste of my time.
Ive gotten ZERO help From mike , basically I don`t know why it happened but too bad for you.

They were just recalibrated this year.

So now I have a $3k paperweight and a ton of lost time, money, and boating .
Would I recommend them? I think you can guess the answer .

On the upside a flywheel and Coupler combo is 20lbs heavier so it helps to keep engines idling when shifting . That`s the SSM version

When you`re cruising around at 3500 rpm and you start smelling something, soon the entire bilge is filled with smoke and your RPM go thru the roof and it smells like burned out clutch, you`ve been Drive guardianed!

Just a suggestion to mike if he’s reading this, many of the big yachts I work on have an access hole in the bellhousing, and if the drive coupler fails you can put a few bolts in to lock the flywheel to the drive hub. Maybe something he can incorporate in case of failure so you can still get back or use the boat for the weekend?
Ive never really believed in them for under 650 hp with an Xr drive. And with the reported failures I’m not going to line up to buy them for my 525’s.

All fuzz and breakage stopped when I upgraded to #5`s and Amsoil gear oil.
I should have spent my money into that improvement instead .

My experience was similar to icdedppl and snapmorgan's. I just kept finding the next weakest link. The "warranty" didn't seem to apply in my case either. Having it to do over again I would focus my resources on drive upgrades and repairs.

Thanks for posting honest experiences with these. I had drive guardians on my list of things to buy in the spring, but I'm not reading a lot of positive experiences. No need to spend $5k for more headaches!

The thing with the DG is that you really don't know how much it is doing, you only when when it fails. Additionally some of the failures don't have much to do with the DG, such as the drive letting go when you are cruising fast in flat water. The only time the DG will help is when the boat is flying. I can't really say if they we are good investment or not. They have kept our SCX's togother now for 3 seasons at 950 horsepower but they have also been a headache at times.

If you can spare the extra cash I would say go for them, just makesure that you have the upgraded hardened steal shaft and that they are properly packed for your horsepower and torque, as those have been the issues that I have encountered.

Yes, after snapping outdrives multiple times, had them installed earlier this year. changed the lower unit fluid recently, looked brand new. No shavings. They work.

Have to pull engines and dyno to get readings. Drive Guardian then programs each guardian for the specific engine.
