Default OMC v8 outboards, broken prop shafts

What causes these engines to break the prop shafts ?

The propeller nut was loose or the shaft was bent prior. I always torque the prop nuts. Have not broken a prop shaft yet.

They fracture over time and then break when you least expect it. I broke a few 20 years ago or so and they all let go running 30-40 miles an hours.
