Default 1999 Bravo 1 Reverse adjustment

Help please. Can someone tell me how to adjust the shift linkage on a 1999 Baja 272 with Bravo one? It goes forward but won't completely shift into reverse. If I pull the linkage towards the bow 1/2" or less it will engage. This is a picture under the engine hatch. Is it one of those two cables? When I pull the the top cable towards the bow it engages. How do you adjust this? Thanks in advance!!!

Is this a new issue???

First thing you should do is verify the lower shift cable is properly adjusted using the tool above.
After that, you can adjust the upper cable as needed, but there is only a small amount of adjustment.

You adjust the upper cable via the cable end. You need to take the pin out and the nut off that holds the other part of the cable and pull the cable away from the shift bracket a little. Then make sure the shifter is exactly in neutral and the drive is exactly in neutral. The shifter should move smooth like butter when not attached to the shift bracket. If it doesn't, your upper cable is probably bad and binding when trying to go to reverse. Adjust the upper cable by unscrewing the cable end as needed circled in red.

And yes, it is only a $10 piece of plastic that is worth every penny.

What if you take the drive out and never touch the cables and on the port drive you get forward and neutral. ???? On starboard you only get reverse and neutral.. and again never touched the cables???
I'm hot and very frustrated.... I have pulled the drive off on both side trying to figure out how and why?

any help is greatly appreciated..

thanks
dave
