If I recall the SC and XR are the same gears, and always the weak point. If you are blowing gears in an XR you will have the same issue in the SC

SCX has stronger gears. Keep in mind, the SCX is also much heavier and sits back further so it is more than just withstanding power, it can change the entire dynamic of the boat
