I'd check to see if there is ANY other purpose for these, like keeping water out, and if not...Toss it, or them. Might make it a little louder!

Just wanted to give a shout out to Bob and crew, along with Jeff and his crew. Could that have been any better of a weekend? Maybe 10* warmer, but we survived.
We traveled about 140 miles on Sunday and another 30-50 miles on Monday. Hats off (Molson 18 pack hat) to Jeff for his continued job as our private"Tour Guide Guy". You continue to amaze me with the 007 routes we take. The Rift was flowing pretty fast, but everyone made it through unscaved. Running back from Brockville on Sunday should make for some pretty cool video. For those of you who didn't make it, I'll let you know when the DVD is comming out. Bob, tell Tom I want my advance copy!
The crew from Scott_Free were cool too. Great bunch of new friends!

As for the resonators the other post referenced a service bulletin to help eliminate water reversion back into the exhaust. If that was the case why does mercry marine call them resonators. I kind of like the louder part

Splashed the boat yesterday for the first time, So am I the last or is Pete still putting the last minute touches on his? Anyway went for about a 100 mile trip boat ran well. No incidents untill we were pulling it out. Got to the ramp tied up to the dock only to have the guy beside us keep drifting over towad us as "I think he's never been in a boat before" the current kept carrying him our way. Cheryl step out on the swim platform and pushed him off once. He drifts back again and like the most awsome first mate she is, she took one for the boat putting her self right between his and ours. Only to find his was being pulled back over before she realized it wasn't there. Yup, you no where the momemtum took her.

If they are anything like the old Gil exhaust, the reason was for the water to collect on the resonators and evaporate before reaching or sucking back to the cylinder heads, which in turn, droplets of colder water would hit the exhaust valves and cause cracking of the valves and seats. If it were me, I'd put them back in, unless others have proven different!

I'm thinking it's still up for debate - as I found both of them pushed back into the flappers, one held all the way open and the other would only open about half way. So one would allow water to fully flow back past the flapper and the resonator wouldn't do much to prevent it while the other was causing a major restriction in exhaust flow. So I guess I'm hopen for others to prove there not needed. Espeically since they cost $40.00 a piece for a piece of plastic that costs about $0.30 to make.
So, if I follow this right it's in the rubber exhaust hose between the exhaust riser portion of the manifold and the thru-hull tip?
If so it is not serving the same purpose as the "turbolator ring" that were in the Gil manifolds that Dave mentioned. The turbolator ring sits between the manifold and the riser or tail pipe part of the manifold assembly, it serves the purpose that he stated. I believe that Mercs 496 manifolds have a similar ring that sits in the same location. This is not the part in your picture. Seems like this device might serve the same as having an internal flapper in the thru-hull tip itself which acts as a secondary flapper to water coming in thru the exhaust when combined with the external Salisbury flapper. This part would have to be installed by the boat builder as Merc does not ship engines with the rubber hose on the exhaust, that is a builder deal based on how they route the exhaust.
Do your exhaust tips have the internal flappers? The external rubber flappers? Both? Neither?
