Got ya. From the pictures I saw earlier on it looked like they had a metal trim that went over that. Looks like you are going to have to break out the mallet and torch Nort! Don't burn the house down!!! :D

In that picture, it looks like an aluminum hinge. Is it.....mine is stainless? Also the holes on it are opposite of each other, and probably twice as many. Mine are not.

Nort - I narrowed the center step for better access to my sea strainers, so I needed longer doors and hinges. I bought a 6' stainless hinge from McMaster and cut it to length, using every other hole. I countersunk the diamond plate before having it powdercoated, so there would be no exposed raw aluminum.

Step project is coming together and should be finished soon. Naked parts from factory are all white powder coated now. That sucked for the shop that did it as there was so much corrosion because there was no plating. At least Formula used stainless hardware......but not sure if it was 316 stainless as there was some rust. I had to pound some of the hardware out of the holes. See the white powder on the floor? Ordered all new 316 stainless hardware (and the correct size). I noticed some of the hardware was longer but cut to size. :lolhit: Had the factory piano hinge bead polished too. That's the only part that will show when done.

C_Spray 02-22-2012 08:37 AM

Hey! That looks like my collection of McMaster-Carr boxes. What are the orange washers?

Audiofn 02-22-2012 09:55 AM

Nort isn't that just galvanic corrosion? On the 928's Porsche used plastic washers and plastic sleaves to hold on the fenders. There is a chart I can't remember what it is called that tells you the best bolts, washers, nuts for a particular metal. I would assume even allum. bolts would be strong enough?

PhantomChaos 02-22-2012 11:02 AM

I figured unprotected (non-plated) aluminum structure and stainless screws combined with moisture (fresh or salt) caused most of this corrosion. I'm adding these Polyelastomer Cushioning and Sealing Washers .060" thick against the powder coated parts. Generally it will be:

Screwhead > SS Flat Washer > Poly Washer > Part > Poly Washer > Part > Poly Washer > SS Flat Washer > SS Locking Nut

Audiofn 02-22-2012 11:46 AM

Sounds about the same as what Porsche does. Maybe a mylar film could work as well?

I found one of those tables. This one is for salt water.

C_Spray 02-22-2012 12:38 PM

I just counted on the powder coating and a dab of Tef-Gel corrosion inhibitor. So far, so good, but I'm in 98% fresh water, unlike you. Good thinking.

Getting it done. I have to go modify the "T" part right now before I install that. Need to relief the hinge area more.

Didn't think so, but I saw you managed to squeeze it in the back of an S class earlier in the thread. I had a CL550 for 4 years and upgraded to the CL63 last year. It will put a smile on your face. It's funny, seems like lots of Formula owners have MB's.

No, mine is a 2011, but it has all the cosmetic changes like the LED's in the headlights (which I had to have). I don't think they made any more changes in 2012. Mine also has the AMG high performance package. The 550 was silver like yours, but the new one is black. The CL's are nice because you don't see many let alone the AMG CL's. I had it to 150 and it was still pulling hard.:drink: Are you going to the AMG driving academy? I see there are 2 tracks in CA.

I noticed that also...W220 S500 here...'04 with an AMG/RENNtech reprogram...170 top side. ...cruise at 100 for hours in comfort. I have totally embarrassed a few Audi A-8's and BMW 760's.

Almost there. Had a new storage box made for the front of the trailer and we put a new E/H brake controller in there to make it last longer. Nearly everything is new or rebuilt. Engines are in and tested. Few more things and we'll be water testing. That was easy! LOL What a long project. About 2 years. :cartman::cartman::thankyouthankyou::thankyouthank you:

More pics tomorrow as I hope to stop by.

Maybe you should get Ron S. AKA Running with Duct Tape to drive it for you. You even remember how to drive one of these things? :D

axapowell 03-30-2012 07:30 AM

Nice work Nort, let us know how the testing goes.

BTW, hoping to hear back from Formula this week!

Poked it's head out of the "nest" yesterday to get a sound system update/upgrade. Hope to sea trial on Sunday if the weather holds up.

I could not believe the inventory these guys have. They only inventory Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood and Sony.....but geez! That pic is just one wall!

Looks great, but don't you need a DRW to tow a boat over 18'?:whistle::party-smiley-004::grinser010:

Is that just a reflection, or do you have some kind of tail light up on the transom?

LOL.....I know. I may be risking it without a DRW truck. Actually I'd rather have that but can't justify it for the amount of towing we do. This was the first time I've towed with the new truck. It seemed fine but was surprised that it could burn rubber from a start if I wanted to, even with all that pounds per square inch. LOL

That is a reflection of the tail light on the bottom of the trim tab. :D

The two original Kenwood amps......big one had garble on the port channel, the smaller amp for the cabin speakers was DOA. No nothin.

Replaced the two amps with two new amps. Old ones were 600w for cockpit and cabin was 300w. Replaced with cockpit 1000w and cabin 600w. The amp you installed is still working for now. :) Head unit is the new Kenwood DDX719. Perfect per the boat. Can't think of anything wrong about it.
