Looking for my first Formula

Hello -

Just sold my 01 Baja 272 with 120 original hours and now looking to upgrade in size. I am searching for a 312 Formula Fas Tech in the 2000-2003 era range with low hours, fresh water boat, Big Block Chevy's (496 or ??) and really super clean.

If anyone out there knows of any please send me some leads.

Any additional info or what to watch for on these boats would be helpful as i have never owned a Formula before.

I think the 292 will be too small and not ready for a 353...so looing for a clean 312.

pondrunner 09-12-2012 02:09 PM

Don't know about a 312, but I can offer up my 2003 292 fastech with blue merc racing scorpions that will beat any 312 with stock power! 230 hours, excellent condition on matching eagle trailer. I'm local...PM me with an email address to send pics to if interested.

what price range there was one floating around detroit craigs a while ago, i'll start linking a few later

I wouldn't rule out a nice 292, i had a 33 Fouintain and my present boat, 88 292 feels the same in size, though I had a lot more power. I wouldnt hang in the ocean with my 292 too much, but for the bay and in the Hudson river, ny where im presently boating it is very good. I couldnt tow anything bigger too.

wwolfe 09-13-2012 08:20 AM

Really want to be in the $45-55 range for a 312. Have not totally ruled out a 292...need to go in one to see how much room i will gain over my 272 Baja. Just not sold on twin SBC's. Are the 6.2's on the newer 292's good motors?

Dtile 09-13-2012 08:52 AM

I heard the 383's perform better than big blocks from some mechanics...I'm a big block guy though. I just came from a similar Baja...different world, the Formula.

wwolfe 09-13-2012 10:08 AM

I Wanted a 271 Fastech in the worst way for my first boat...but couldnt find anything in the price range or hour range i wanted.....so settled with my 272 Baja. Great boat but not the quality build of a Formula and know whatever i buy this time around i plan on keeping for a while so want to make sure its the right boat.

pondrunner 09-13-2012 10:31 AM

I did a cursory search on Boat Trader and found one fresh water deal at your price(you will get it for less than listed with this dealer/good place), but with 6.2 power. The 312 would be about a 65 mph boat with these or 454's. I would want 454 mags or 496 mags minimum in this boat, 502's or HO's all the better. Alot of saltwater options with that power and a few freshwaters, but much higher asking prices (70K +). With a 292 and 6.2's you're gonna get 70+. The 292 is a nice compromise and your available boats increases significantly at your price range...you could even pick and choose.

I've had a 312 Fastech and loved it, but here at LOTO it wasn't big enough, now we have a 353 and it's tons better, you still might want to think about the 353, you will be in a year or two, we love ours.

Good luck in your search, show us the pics when you find something.

Been to Lakeport in Laconia a few times to look at their inventory. Love the 312 listed...but do not want 6.2's in a 312. Gonna look a bit harder at 292's but needs to be right graphics, interior, options, etc. Need to look at one in person to see how much cabin room is available.

saw it myself on CL. not a fan of the graphics package but hours and price are attractive.

Why do people not take a cover off to sell a boat? or have pics of the motors at least? Must be the wife getting rid of it then.

pgolder 09-17-2012 08:17 PM

they were 454s 420hp Now their 60 over stroked to 496 with dart heads ported and polished high rise dart intakes and lightning exhaust dyno says 525hp on pump gas. She runs in the upper 70s

sweet...hydraulic of course? WOT handles fine? Lightning exhaust fit ok as with heights from air arrestor to hatch? mike

pgolder 09-17-2012 10:51 PM

No hydraulic's boat handles great. The lightning exhaust are a tight fit but their in there. With 5" holes under the silent thunder exhaust she sounds mean!!!

Thats a sharp boat if its the one I'm thinking not sure on the usage,

wwolfe 09-21-2012 11:44 AM

Boat was very nice..but just not sold on 6.2's on a 312. Really want a consistent 70MPH boat and think 496's is the only way to get to this. Searching for a 2000-03 312 with twin big blocks and preferably 496's. Cabin has enough room for us..just need more power. Keep your eyes open for clean 312's with big blocks!

88242LS 09-21-2012 12:04 PM

theres one on detroit craigs and onevon bt with 5o2's

wwolfe 09-21-2012 01:10 PM

I talked to the guy in MI with the red, white and blue 03 312 with 496's on Craigslist. Sounds like a nice boat but no trailer. Is that the one you are referring to?

I believe so,

That's my buddy's boat. He's got Lake Cumberland Marine to list it for him. I'm pretty sure you could deal with him directly and get it cheaper (get rid of their mark up).

Boat is in excellent condition. Let me know if you want his contact info directly.

I am really being picky on my next boat. Has to be a 312 Fastech from 2000-2003 range and have 502's or 496's and good colors. Looked at one Sunday locally that had gorgeous colors but twin 6.2's. Just think 640HP total with a 8,000 lb boat is not a good combo and if i need to sell down the road will be tougher sell.

Found a 03 312 with twin 496Mags and nice colors (red, white, blue daytona package) in MI on CL. Going to try an look at it in next 1-2 weeks.

Really like the room of the 312 and obvious build quality...looking at a Baja 302 Boss this weekend to compare room as well.

Thanks for the leads though...my other requirement is stock power. No modified motors unless they are Merc Blue HP's!

88242LS 09-25-2012 08:32 AM

nothing wrong with knowing what u want, will keep a eye out

wwolfe 09-25-2012 10:01 AM

i wasnt that fussy on my first boat, but after owning one and now moving up to a larger size and spending much more $$...I am going to be a picky person and not just settle!!

EMSDiver 09-27-2012 01:58 PM

wwolfe any luck on finding a 312?

wwolfe 09-27-2012 03:07 PM

Not yet. Going to look at a 03 312 with 496 mags in MI in about 2 weeks. Other than that...can only find 6.2's out there. If you know anything let me know please

EMSDiver 09-27-2012 10:49 PM

I am just researching boats is all. I have seen them on boat trader but have not really looked at the 312. We are a family of 4 and want something for the ocean/bay and big lakes. Something that the kids can swim off of and we can scuba dive off of and have a fun day or weekend on the water.

Good luck with your search.

keep'em coming 88242LS! This one is a bit out of my price range though. Looked at another Baja 302 today and looking at the 03 312 in MI next week. After that, think i am planning a visit to MN. Really leaning towards a 312 over the Baja...just needs to make $$ sense.

I agree this is the one I would be going after

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/cs...303081228.html

Clean, good colors, lower hours, decent price for options, all freshwater, HO motors, steering, covers etc. Only downside I can see is it doesn't have k-planes. Throw a pair of 280's on there and you have every option I think you would need for a great setup.
