Is it out there?

....still looking for the right 272 SR1. 87-90, solid, well cared for and maintained boat with amenities and the right colors. I AM FUSSY, may be too fussy at times but that's me.

I just returned to Cleveland from WI, about an hour north of Milwaukee . A fella insisted his boat was as close to flawless as I would ever find. Red Gray Black and White (sharp!). Pictures looked great but pictures hide a lot and I know this from many years of buying from internet listings. So I ask specific questions about certain things I see, or don't see, in the pics. We correspond for a week prior discussing specific items and areas on the boat. I arrive about 9 hours and 550 miles from home to find A boat that has been inaccurately described, to say the least. I won't bore with all the details but when you are selling something that has been repainted and the newer paint is peeling/flaking around the edges and it's full of fish eyes and dirt, you probably should disclose that to your potential buyer. It was an obvious repaint and I was never told, or could see from the pics, that it had been repainted. My visit went down hill from there. That was just one of many, many misrepresentations on that boat. I also agreed to pay a premium for his boat provided his description was accurate and I was satisfied with the sea trial. Seller says he is very fussy also.....
Anyway, moving on now. I'm still in the market. At the advice of many experienced Formula owners on OSO I will consider big motors....and small as well. Must be solid without needing bulkhead or stringer work. I'm really not a fan of gray vinyl that looks yellow ,faded, ripped or cracked. Also not big on dock rash and severe paint fade. The more canvas the better, a nice trailer is a plus, shore power, fridge, battery charger, dual batteries etc. is all great, reliability is paramount, and I am Fussy (NICE BOAT).
Most of the above, if at issue, can be corrected when discussing money.
The right boat is out there I am sure...just simply need to find it. The Formula family here on OSO continues to provide great info to all who in inquire. So, I'm throwing this "out there" in hopes of finding the right one. Thank you.

Are you Looking at 272's because you like them or because of budget reasons?

Actually both. We like the size for a 27ft.- larger than most 27s yet still trailerable. Love the classic lines and Imron paint from that era (87-90ish). It does fit the budget we set for a boat. We have a few toys in the garage and boating will share time with other summer hobbies. So, we are looking to stay around the $20K mark to keep this as affordable as possible. If for some unforseen reason we either can't find time or just don't enjoy it as we thought then I'm not $30 $40 or $50K in a boat I can't sell. I think most folks wanting a go fast can find $20K to go boating.

Is it the Newport colored boat? If so, I spoke with the owner on Monday. Boat looks decent (sent me 20 or so pics) he did say it had a 1000 hrs on hull AND motors. I'm still not big on the colors. Lil red offered up his boat prior to selling it and although in real nice shape, I'm hung up on that color combo.
I'll check out Erie Craigslist in case its a different boat. Thanks for the heads up.

88242LS 11-14-2012 08:16 AM

ya thats the boat

1MOSES1 11-14-2012 01:27 PM

if you continue to get caught up with color combinations, year, model, price, condition, etc...you are never going to be a boat owner. buying anything in life, especially a boat (with your specifics) there will be compromises. think you need to start letting go a little. not trying to bash ya...just reality.

hope you find what you are looking for!!!!

Search is going... OK. I've been talking to a fella with and '87 272 and I am waiting for video from another on an '89 272. Nothing solid yet. Fortunately there's no rush due to the off season now but I still do a nationwide craigslist search every couple of days and monitor ebay, for what that's worth.
How's the new ride? No hard feelings on my color preferences, LOL.

vintagepowerboat 11-18-2012 09:17 PM

I have a 90 272 w fresh 365 mags in the 20s for sale. it is on e-bay now. Central Illinois.

That's awesome, I'm glad to hear that! Too many folks saying the same as you about the 272. I really am looking forward to this boat.

Thanks for the heads up on the ebay boats. I'll take a look.

Wow! I forgot all about those drives. I remember those from the mid 80's. I saw a set once and actually I think it was on a Formula. Naw, I'm going to have to say no but thanks for asking. Do you have it listed? I would like to see pics of those surface drives.

I am very tempted to look at this one myself.

http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/boa/3397149622.html

'84 302 SR1 with optional low profile windshield with twin 454s and TRS drives. One of the ads for this boat asks for $8900 w/o trailer.

1984 was the first year for the SR1 so this is a milestone boat. It's been on the market for a while so I would not be surprised if the seller would entertain legitimate cash offers.

It's been on eBay since June. Actually sold once and was relisted. Makes me wonder if all is ok with it.

I might take a look...if I don't buy it I'll give you a report. Older Formulas aren't big sellers down here...most buyers in the used market are after twin outboard center consoles.

Saw that one the other day. Think cabin needs work. Seem to remember that one with cabin pics and its a lot of plywood. Nice looking and definitely worth a look

Lots of rotted transoms on these older formulas.
