The VDO for my 311 was discontinued according to egauge and others. Mine was 17.1 inches. Egauge had a VDO 16.5 and 17.8 deep (or so going by memory here). I measured my tank depth and had plenty of room so I went with the 17.8 inch sender, works perfect.
My advice is to measure the one you have and find one close. If the tank depth allows, go a little longer, if not a little shorter. Shorter will give you more reserve, longer a more accurate tank reading.
Edit: In your case 224-240 is the number. 15.8 inches. Your old part number shows a depth of 15 15/16" so this new one is very close.

Thanks for the reply. unfortunately egauges has nothing of any length in the old style sender, and new senders are not comparable with the old gauge. Only solution I can see is new 240 ohm sender and new style gauge which will look a little weird. I was just trying to help an old customer of 20+ years ago . looks like he will have to make the choice, original look and fill tank regularly or out of place look on one gauge!

Yes, no problem. I bought mine from egauges as well, but had to do my own research. They were as helpful as they could be on the phone, but just didn't seem to be able to cross reference or offer a close replacement. 224-240 was the sending unit that was the closest replacement to your original part number and should work just fine in the Formula 252.
