223ss Speed?
#2
I have a 223 LS that used to have a 454/330 in it until it got new power. I was told by the previous owner that it ran 61 on the speedo (which would be about 58 GPS). Good guess!
Fyi, 470 HP gets it to 68.7 GPS/72 speedo@5200

Thanks Craig,
Just got back and the boat was an '89' with only 271 hours for $8500. Now what does that tell you? Well , bottom painted , salt water boat. Rust all over the outside of the engine. Beautiful teal finish oxidized to a light green. Cover shrunk about two sizes too small and probably a dozen snaps missing on the cover and or boat. Filthy cockpit and believe it or don't the cuddy was immaculate. There was also a piece of rub rail missing and there was a ton of rust on the galvanized trailer (fenders and fastening hardware , mostly) but it did have 4 new tires and fresh bearings.
It amazes me how some people take care of things
. I have a 1989 272 SR-1 and still get asked if it's new
. And that's with 724 hours as of last weekend

Hey Mopower,
My first Formula was '88 223SS, standard 454/330. Bought it used in '92. Red/black/white. Boat was perfect when I bought it, 150 hrs, paid 22.5. Ran that boat till '95. Better than perfect when I sold it. Only problem was keeping that red swim platform looking good, but I did. Got 22 even for it '95. Not bad huh? Just mentioning that because I agree with you. How can these yoyos let their hard earned cash and pretty boats go to s**t like that? It amazes me. People not familiar with Formulas were constantly asking meif the boat was new. Even Formula guys were asking me if I had it painted. Nope, just kept it waxed and in the garage when not on the water. Sun is the killer!
Anyway, about speed. Lightly loaded and trimmed for all she was worth I could get 63 on the speedo. The LS model was a little faster in that more weight was further back on that model. LS with same power would do 65-66 mph.
I've Had a 242 and now a 311, but I still miss that 223. It truely was a creampuff! Best riding 22 foot boat on the planet, period!!
