If the builder missed something that obvious, then chances are another shoe was going to drop. At least you have all of your parts intact and the opportunity to build a motor that will last you for years. Good luck with the build Hunter. |
Block is now cleaned, bored to 4.60. Je 10.5:1 marine pistons on order(said to be 3 weeks out). The 088 heads were nice and clean all valves sealed nicely and re ground.
My drain plug is 1/2x13. All of the kits I'm finding for the hose drain are fine thread. Anyone have suggestions before I weld a fitting to the bottom of the pan? |
Who’s pan is it? Are the treads npt? You could use a male to female brass 90 in that case and screw the hose into that. You probably know this but, marine bearing clearances are typically a little looser. Especially for a guy like you that likes to wake the ponies up. Are you gen 4,5 or 6? |
Hunter, put a blower on it and call it a day.
Roscoe you watching the LOTO shootout live feed here https://livestream.com/lakerace2018/shootoutsaturday |
Gary, this thread is for guys who aren’t on a 90 day boat tour of the US inland waterways. You’re probably making a clocked run at LOTO as we speak. Hope you’re having fun. Now back to oil pans.... |
It is a regular merc stamped steel 8qt hp500 pan. The threads are standard 1/2"x13. I believe I'm going to just weld a 90° fitting to the bottom ans run the hose with a cap on the end.
believe it's a gen 5 if I remember correctly. I'd have to look for a picture of the casting number to verify. |
Done a little rubbing on one of the headers yesterday before I had to go work on the shrimp boat. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...dd1365e0f4.jpg

Still waiting on the pistons to arrive. I need to go get the oil pan and do my drain plug/hose I want to make. May have a friend powder coat the intake silver so I dont have to worry about the aluminum oxidizing.

Been building this guy up for hunting season. Has a 115 yamaha on it. Been playing with props after building carbs and fresh plugs. Got 44mph today art 5500rpm. Not bad for what it is. Plan to get it all cleaned up and painted green/camo in the next few weeks. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b34253fb2d.jpg

Anything to share on the build? |

Not really. Pistons showed up 2 weeks ago. I dropped the flywheel off this week so they can get it all balanced. I plan to get a fitting and hose on the oil pan this week for easy clean oil changes. Been busy focusing on building the cab boat before it gets cold. |

Drilled to match so it wont take hours to drain oil. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bb1f6cb3ec.jpg Found that with nothing more than re tapping the hole this fitting worked just fine. Put plenty of rtv on the threads, under the washer, and on the inside. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...680dea70b2.jpg Before drilling. |
did you use hi temp silicone? How far above the inside of the pan does the fitting protrude? You can get half couplings from a hydraulic supply house with the proper thread and counter bore face for the o ring to seal. Vescor/ LDI or DMIC should have them. The Motion Industries shop in Pensacola might have onr.
|
Yes it is hi temp rtv silicone. The threads do not protrude into the pan. It is nearly flush. I have 7 different hydraulic shops that I deal with at work and no one could get a fitting that was 1/2"×13 so I just used this. It sat for 5 days in the shop with hydraulic oil in it and no leaks. Obviously that wasnt heated or vibrating like the engine will but I have no doubts it will be sealed up just fine. I will likely put a hose on it with a male #6 jic fitting for easy draining.

No real updates other than it's as snug as a bug in a rug under all 3 of its covers.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...eba002a91b.jpg It's been hard to find motivation to fool with it between rain and playing in this thing my buddy got a few months ago. Planning on a tuna trip Saturday night/Sunday. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9e744e8a74.jpg |
Got to gander at the short block last night. Gave them the oil pan and got the intake. Have a friend of a friend bead blasting and clear powder coating it. 1st attempt so we will see how it turns out.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6c55d9ecf3.jpg It has a somewhat red tint to it for some reason. But all in all I'm happy with it. We will see how it looks all assembled. |
Weather is going between cold and bearable daily so I decided to hold off a little longer on install. The engine is sitting safely at my friends shop out of the elements.
|
No pics? What a tease! LOL |
I was in a hurry. I hope to get around to dressing it out sometime soon.
