22p Bravo I on my 242LS; results, questions

so my boat came with a 21p Mirage Plus that has overall been a good fit; acceptable holeshot, a top end right at 4700rpm and 53mph. I'd read about people liking the way a 22p Bravo I four-blade performs; a loss of a few mph on top, but improved holeshot and cruising characteristics. I do quite a bit of cruising with the family and wanted a second prop, so to eBay i went.

fast forward to this weekend running the pre-owned 22 B1 for the first time. as anticipated, holeshot was definitely better, and top end definitely reduced a few mph (saw a best of 50.8 on gps). i was under the impression this wheel would help with the porpoise issue i have cruising around the 3k rpm mark, but it definitely didn't.

here is my question: i can't spin it any higher than 4300rpm; does this sound right, or do you think it's had some work done? should my 454/330 be able to spin it closer to 4500-4700, or have all the testimonials i've read come from 454/365 boats? if i had it worked to get the rpm's up, would i gain much top end back?

i had the same boat, it was an 88 with 330 and bravo 1.5 yours and mine left the factory with 23p mirage plus, so with that prop before I modified the motor, i got 4300 ish rpm and 52 mph. on the best day. aprox if memory serves me correct
. the boat would porpose when heavily loaded with passengers and gas and take some time to get on plane. So I got a stainless turning point 19 pitch 4 blade. The boat rocketed up on plane, the stern lift was amazing. I gained about 200 rpms max (4600) and lost about 3 miles per hour, BUT it made the boat awesome, i could tube with the kids, elimnated porposing and no more telling people to get up front for a second or three to plane out quicker. hope this helps. I would at least try a lower pitch, 4 blade. i am surprised the prop you bought didn't improve/eliminate proposing......the turning point eliminated it for me.

You are a bit over propped. As a general rule you should drop an inch iof pitch going from three to four blade. I'm guessing a 20p is just right. If it was me I would look for a 450 hp motor to put in front of that new prop. Ha ha.

i was under the impression it came with the 21p mirage plus. i also have a 23p mirage plus from a previous boat that i tried for the sake of data that was too much prop, couldn't get that one past 4200 rpm.

definitely over propped now, that's why i was curious what i'd get by having the 22p worked to closer to 21 or even 20; 22p is the smallest B1 made.

trust me, i'd love to slide a 502 in that bilge! hopefully someday. had one in my last boat that was smaller and lighter... miss that motor.

You need to find a revolution 19 and try it. I'm running around 425hp a d yesterday was my first run on my new to me bravo 22. It made me happy still a light porpoise but I can trim out of it. I've been running my revolution for a while and love it just wasn't enough wheel for my cruising I do.

what rpm were you turning with that power? could you trim all the way up without it ventilating?

Redneckcustoms13 06-19-2017 10:42 AM

My cruise rpm was 3700-3800 speed 38-39. Im dealing with a bad trim sender so I can't tell you where the trim gauge was but I could definitely over trim it.

I did have my 22pitch labbed and got back to 4600 max rpm, i have a 454 330hp alpha and it does fine. You will need to have it worked.

Brandon, the 242 with 330hp 454 came from the factory with a 21p mirage. My 242, before I repowered, had the same engine, bravo one, 21p mirage and I recall similar rpm and speed as what you seeing.

Any by the way, I'm always interested in more power so let me know if you want my 502mpi!!
