2005 353 Fastech - Questions
#31
The CMI mufflers have a great reputation. The problem is the mufflers that are on there now are going to be a PIA to get off without damaging the gel. They are not just bolted on, the factory used 5200 behind them against the transom. I was going to run straight thru tips but found out the problems to take them off so i gutted them instead. There was no way to saw thru the bound with wire without damaging something, maybe you can figure it better than I could. If it was me and I had to meet your sound goals I would go the turn down route. What if you go thru all this and the new mufflers don't meet the goal? There are people that have taken their boats to CMI for custom turndowns and they fab in 2 days sometimes 1 day.

Picked up a 2005 353 Fastech w/ 525's this weekend. 165 hours, incredibly clean, really happy with the purachse. '
Hoping you guys can share some knowledge with me as I am new to go fast boats and Formulas, i came from a 2015 Malibu Wakesetter, so bear with me.
A few questions, any help is appreciated in advance:
1. Muffler options... The boat is loud and i love it. But the Sheriff and the neighbors have taken note in just 3 hours on the water. I'm on Lake Minnetonka and i plan on getting it out on bigger water but would love to be able to cruise without unwanted attention. I believe it does have mufflers, but i am looking to do something more. What are my best options here? I hear turn downs are easy, but that doesn't do anything for me once i am on plane? Captains call is illegal and the water patrol knows to look for that as well. I assume a more restrictive muffler is the only other option? Has anyone run something that they would recommend?
2. Gauges. I see some minor condensation in most of the gauges. Is this normal, is there an easy fix here?
3. I'm having some trouble with the drive levers sticking, is there a general maintenance solution for these? The throttles also are not matching RPMs in comparison to position exactly, is there an easy adjustment to be made or is that a complicated change?
4. GPS maps... I'd like to have a decent map option without carving out a hole in the console. Are there good hand held type units that you guys run on unfamiliar water?

Looking at the Corsas on the Hardin Marine website, I don't see the issue with removing them. They have 3 long studs that go through the transom, and you can see the backing nuts in the first picture in post #15. Why can't the OP just remove the exhaust hose and clamps, remove the stud nuts, and press the Corsas back out of the hole? Even if they are sealed with 5200 won't they come loose?

The Corsa’s come off even with 5200. It was a PITA. We actually used a 6 ft pipe that fit in the Corsa’s and rocked them back and forth a little while one person was cutting at the 5200 with a razor blade. It took about 30min for all 4 mufflers.
The biggest thing that we tested was actually the amount of back pressure on the XTS’s. Bascially, there was no change between the XTS’s and the Corsa’s. I do think the XTS’s will be quieter from first hand knowledge and seeing the decibel readings. Trust me they are still loud and sound good the tone just changes a little.

It looks like you have ITS. If so, I would go with Turndowns (assuming they fit) and not mufflers. The mufflers are going to restrict the motors at least a little, the Turndowns will not. Plus, at idle the Turndowns will be quieter. However, I have never seen a Fastech with them...
GPS - Mine is permanently mounted on top and sits just below the top of the windshield and across maybe a 1/2 of the gauges. Sorry, no pictures. That said, I really like the job snowrunner did. If I had to do it again, I'd probably go his route.

Jred2255 you bought my boat from Shipyard Marine. I am sure you will be happy with it because its a great boat. Some things I would like you to know is that ECM's where reprogrammed by whipple and boat requires premium fuel. I am sure if you ran 89 would be ok but they request 91 octane. I only owned boat for one season but I did pull headers and sent to CMI to get all updates, changed all fluids including drives, pulled drives to grease u joints. I also marked trim indicators at neutral position but never had any problems with them sticking. Maybe just need little lube on spring assembly on drive. Any other questions let me know. Enjoy that boat runs good!

I have access to 91 non-ethanol, so I will stick with that.
Hope you are enjoying the Fountain. If i have any questions i'll shoot you a PM. I appreciate it!

Guys thanks again for all of the feedback and help. You're saving me a lot of time and money with all of the info.
CMI is telling me that I cannot put their turndown pipes on my current exhaust set-up, that I would need the XTS system if I want to put in turndowns. Is there another company that can put turndowns on the stock exhaust? I assumed that any exhaust shop could fab up?

I was just looking at the specs for my Hardins (post #13 of this thread) on their website and it says they tested at 88db.

I think my boat is VERY quiet for running two big blocks with race headers. Are these Corsas with baffles really that much louder?
thx.

He suggested these, but was not sure if they would clamp on to the Corsa muffler exhuast because it has a bell shape. Think they would fit?
