Oops, I see you had already answered the above question. Did you have to do anything to the Z24 before installing it in the boat?

Actually a Z24 is a chevy cavalier I tink! A ZZ4 is a small block GM performance parts crate motor. Mostly same specs as a 1970 1/2 LT-1. Very cool parts for very little money. Cuda, the one thing to remember with this motor is that a ZZ4 has to be run in fresh water or with closed cooling. I run in fresh water only. Reason - aluminum heads and intake. As far as changes made it really works well in the marine world. Cam profile was ok but reversion was an issue. I needed to put headers and tailpipes on it. Went with IMCO polished "manifolds" and some custom tailpipes that dump water near the transom. After that, just installed all the mercruiser engine accessories: quadrajet, alternator, fuel pump, merc electronic ignition, power steering, starter, etc. Had to slightly tune the distributor and the carb needed a little going through. Not one problem. I ordered this boat from Formula with the "performance package" ( 2" higher X dimension and a 3 blade 23pitch cleaver.) With the 350 mag it ran 4800 to 4900 rpm and I saw around 62 or 63 mph. ZZ4 turns 5600 rpm and on a 60 degree day with 1/3 tank o gas, and a slight chop it does 72 mph or so. Total investment of $2850.00 plus tax on the motor (friend at GM) and about $1900.00 for the IMCO parts. And as long as you tell them your ZZ4 was installed in your 1973 camaro you get a one year warranty. These crate motors are really a total bargain. Just check out the specs on those new ZZ572's!

Dang, I guess it's time to go up one step on my glasses.

I checked out the ZZ motors. I might need a new motor for my Donzi. I have a noise that the mech says sounds like a rod, but it doesn't sound like a rod to me.

There are two versions of the ZZ572.
ZZ572-620 ... 620 hp @5500 650 ft lbs @4500; 9.6:1 comp. All Bowtie components. 850 cfm king demon carb; Hydralic roller cam, HEI ignition; runs on 92 octane......$12999.00
ZZ572-720....720 hp @ 6250; 685 ft lbs @4500; 12:1 comp.; all Bowtie components; 1095 king demon carb; Mechanical roller cam; HEI ignition; needs race gas;........$13999.00

these things are complete motors! Powerboat had a column written about these motors a month or two back. Basically they said the 720hp wasn't practical for most everyday boating but the 620hp was nearly perfect. The only mods they recommended were to CHECK the cam to see if it will work in your app. Cam that comes with it may work but reversion must be considered. Bravo owners take heed on that. You need to dump water way behind the headers like you would find on a transmission boat. Otherwise they even liked the cam in this motor. Carb and ignition must be changed out to marine versions. Fresh water only or go to closed cooling. The heads, intake, and even the water circulating pump are aluminum. For a brand new bolt in motor, I don't think anything touches the price. And, if you are really freindly with the owner of your local Chevy dealer you will probably be shocked at the dealer cost on this engine. Prices above are FULL LIST!

That is a hell of a price for that power. I would expect people to jump on that. I'm surprise someone hasn't started "marinizing" that motor already and selling as a "ready to drop in" unit. Sounds like it's about half the price of what most builders charge.

Thanks for the info.
