I had the same problem with mine yesterday. Once I cleaned out the dried clumps of grease it worked like a charm. Of course that was three hours later in the dark, but it's fixed. Once I got the screw jack to release it was easy form there.

Shouldn't hurt it to ratchet it on the bottom of travel if greased properly.

Trolling plug may not be "sparkproof". Careful using it so close to fuel pumps/lines.

Problem solved. I followed Iggy's instructions to take it apart and clean it and it's all set - works like new. The grease wasn't all hard and dried out but the shaft was really jammed down on the gear. I guess it's just a "feature" that you learn about thru experience. Thanks everyone !!!
