No no , they're not tied together , rather there is only one 12v source coming from the batteries in the back. If bat 1 is selected both read 1. If bat 2 is selected both read 2 . If both are selected they read both.
You can tell by turning one ignition on and reading the volt meter(engine not running) now start the other engine and watch both volt meters...they will both charge

Now shut iff the one that's running and both meters will drop
