Fountain Speaker Up Grade

I have a 29 Fever that I would like to upgrade/add speakers in. I have kinda singled out the JL Audio Marine Speakers. Anyone have any experience with these. Also where on this boat would be a good place to add speakers? Can they be added in place of the mood lighting Fountain symbol on the sides of the cockpit? And/or I was thinking of installing them on the sides in the front lower part of the cockpit. The only thing that bothers me is cutting a hole in the boat. Can this cause any type of weakness in the boat or cause any cracks to take place?

Bob,
I added / upgraded speakers to my 2004 29'. I had Extreme Audio out of Somerset, Ky do the work and they did a great job! They added two 12" subs in the back bench area and replaced the Fountain emblem with two speakers and installed two down at the Frt seats by the leg area with 2 speakers. I also added an additional remote at the transom. :drink: They installed MB Quartz and I really like them. They also installed another amp as well as a 6 dics CD changer and a DVD player with a 13 inch monitor for the Kids to watch. The CD changer, amp and DVD player/ monitor were added about two weeks ago so I have not been able to see it since the boat is at Cumberland Lake Marine getting some additional work done besides winterizing it. I cant wait until next summer!!

Eugene

PS
If I get the 38 Lightning I want, I would modify the speaker set up a little more than what I did this time. :drink: :D

Re: Fountain Speaker Up Grade

My 27 fever has two 10's under the rear seat (i want to move these - takes up good storage space), two 6x9's under the rear seat (mounted to the wall, firing forward by the rear seat passengers legs) and two speakers where the fountain emblems were.

if i had it to do myself, i'd put the subs elsewhere, lose the 6x9's and go with another set of components by the front passengers. The soundstage is too low and the stereo can hardly be heard from in the water behind the boat, which is where i usually want to be when listening.

What are the best Marine speakers out? Sound wise and durability.

What size speakers will fit where the fountain emblems are?

Re: Fountain Speaker Up Grade

I also put a set of 6.5" mb quarts where the emblem lights were. You will have to make a trim ring and cover it with vinyl because the speakers are a little smaller in diameter than the emblem lights. I put 4 2-way 8" pioneers under the rear seat. To get more speakers in the cockpit, I removed the fold down access doors and replaced them with marine board cut out the same exact size to hold speakers. That way if I ever sell/upgrade I can take the speakers with me. I have two pair of MB quarts 6x9 up front where the front access doors were and two pair of 6.5 where the rear access doors were. I also have put a 12 sub up front where the mirror use to be.

Finally got her back today and here are the pics as requested. Hope this gives you some ideas for the speakers.

I do not have a photo but I also have a remote at the swim deck and I wished I would have mounted a remote for the wifey side of the boat.

Looks good. That's on my wish list also, DVD/CD player with a flat screen to be able to leave the Laptop at home.
What brand is the head unit?

Re: Fountain Speaker Up Grade

Alrighty, I can not find a Kenwood Tuner that plays Radio/CD/ DVD, even on the Kenwood site. Is the head unit just a CD player and the DVD player is part of the flatscreen?
Or a model # for the player will be great if it playes DVD's. I want one that plays everything and has the wired remote option. Also aux, line inputs for a iPod?

Thanks

Re: Fountain Speaker Up Grade

Sorry for the miss conception. The head unit is a single CD unit and the DVD is a seperate unit which is mounted in the box where you store the porti potty. I'm not sure if it can handle Ipod or not. If the wife can find the box for the head unti I'll post you the part number.

Thanks. That explains alot.

I found a JVC head unit that plays all forms today at Circut City, but it is a wireless remote. Not my remote preferance. Sucks not being able to control the radio while running or having to do a reach in and point thing.

Re: Fountain Speaker Up Grade

I hear ya, no pun intended but in my last boat I had an Alpine system in it and the folks who sold/installed it hooked me a unit that was velcroed to the wireless remote that turned the unit into High Frequency instead of the normal infrared. It worked great. I did not have to point at anything. I think the unit was about 150 bucks. I'm not sure if they make such a thing anymore this was several years ago but someone might. If you can find a high end seller / installer of radio equipment they might be able to hook you up.

The MB Quart suck. The grills break easily and I blew 4 sets before going to the JL. The JL sound much better.

Ran-Dom 32 11-16-2010 03:51 PM

looking at upgrading my system over the winter, nothing crazy, what's a good choice on speakers, (to replace the fountain mood lights) JL still one of the better 6.5's?

I was in the same boat as you.
I did not want to cut any holes in the boat as well. I removed all of the doors that are on the sides and made new ones as you will see in the attached photos.
I only had to cut the back seat base for the 10's.
Thats JL 10's under the back seat and 7" Alpines in the side doors for a total of 6 speakers in the cockpit
400 watt Amp on the 10's and 400 watt on the 7's.
It sounded awesome and was more than loud enough while running.
The JL's are by far the best out there in my opinion, but they are pricey!
I kept all my cockpit doors and gave them to the new owner in case he wasn't a stereo man and wanted to put it back factory.
In all the Fountains I have been in the person sitting in the back seat gets an ear full all day sitting next to the speakers where the moodlights are.
Plus I kinda like the moodlights!

The doors were still functional and the compartments could still be used on the sides.

This was all in a 1990 29 Fever

A great place to deal with is Crutchfield.com. Go to their outlet section under marine, and you can find most any thing you want for less than normal prices. They are returns and some are open box, some they call scratch and dent.
I put a system in a Center Console, this summer, head unit, speakers and subs, using their outlet. Every piece was just as new. Plus they have a return policy so if you dont like the way it looks return it.
They also have a tech line, and have used it for several different things. If you have questions about compatability, or installation, they can help you out. Seems like they know their stuff.

Barryb what did you use to open/close them? I see no latch, just curious really thinking about doing this to the doors under my bolsters!

We have been having better results than the JL's with the Focal Polyglass CVX 165's I have a hook up on them if you are intersted let me know.

I put some extremely good velcro all the way around the top of the door.
All you have to do is pull lightly on the top of the speaker and the velcro will start to release.

Not one time did the doors fall open on their own in 3 years. I know the velcro sounds funky, but it really works.

My 29 Fever had the Stereo Upgrade No 1. That means an amplifier and 4 speakers toghether with a wired remote under the drivers side panel. I put in a set of Audiobahn marine speakers where the mood lights were. It make rear passengers feel like they are on a concert. But the problem is that the position is higher so you don't hear the front speakers as much. I have also fittet 2 x 10" Infinity subs under the rear bench seat. They take some space, but I feel it is worth it. Also a MPX amp is fitted in front of the sink in the cabin. THROUGH bolted as I have never got a amp to stay in position with regular screws..... It plays very well, but I miss some more in the front area.

Also, where should I fit a TV?? I have thought about this for over four years, and I can't really decide where to put it!! The cas is that if I use the V-berth, the TV must be seen from the bed. Then it has to be mounted in front of the dashboard. BUT then again, if you sit in the bench sofa, you can't see it as it is right over your head... That have led me to the conclution that it have to be mounted at the position of the stereo. Then you can see it from both spots. But this seems like a very difficult place to have it mounted!! Any ideas on this one???

As for the wiring of the head unit, I have wired the cabin speakers to the head unit and the cockpit speakers to the amp. There is a "signal wire" from the head to the amp, and I have put a switch on this in order to shut off the "cockpit speakers' amp", to save a lot of power if I am inside the boat and I dont want people on the dock to hear music. Same goes for the subwoofer amp. I will also make a line in wire to the AUX connection frem the TV when that comes in. I will go for a TV with integrated DVD player.

I wired my stereo the the same way. I didn't want the cabin speakers to be on an amp for watching movies, so I just use the HU to power the speakers in the cabin. 4 speakers in there still rock to movies. I used a 6 pole switch..... to switch between the turn on wire for the amps in the cockpit speakers/subs, and also used 1 lead for each of the 4 cabin speaker to turn them off/on. This way I still have full control over fade/balance of both the cabin and cockpit.
My HU plays DVDs, so I use it as my player, with the video out going to my flatscreen. The TV is 12VDC, so I can watch movies out on the water if I want.
Mounted the TV where the mirror was. Made a box to surround the TV and to angle it a little for better viewing on both sides of the cabin. It's worked great for us. The mount was made to fit within the mirror mounting holes so I can change it back w/o having any holes from the TV mount.
I've since removed the additional front RCA jacks as that was before I mounted the TV and used them for when TV sat on the counter and simply plugged it into the Video out jack. The audio in jacks was for connecting the Ipod, but that has also been changed over to hardwired directly to the rear of the HU.

I sent you the new prices, Bob just pulled 12 pairs out of a boat. It sold and the new owner didn't care for the look of 24 speakers in a 35 Outlaw. :lolhit: If you want to save a few bucks and used doesn't bother you let me know.
