Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
the screwdriver thing is very good but the filters are still a ***** to get at. The relocating kits solve everything once and for all forever. They can probably be found on the net with a little serching. I'll see if I can find a site and post it. I do not have pictures of my past set up which was very slick (no pun intended) Both filters were located side by side eliminating the fact that One is on the oposite side of the engine than the other.

Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
Here is an exam[le of a kit to do the relocation job.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...705?n=15684181 This can be installed anywhere you want but I would not install them higher than the engine location so that the oil will run out of the lines when changing the oil. |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I use the "punching the hole" technique and it works pretty well on my 500's. They are easy to get at. If I were you I would remote mount them and put them right-side-up. I did this with my last boat. Nice thing was I could pre-fill the filters with oil.
Why does Mercury mount the filters upside-down anyway? |
Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I pop a hole in them with a screw driver also, works well.

Yea, Good question?

Re: Messy Oil Filter Removal
I use an old laundry soap plastic container cutting off 3/4 of the top keeping the handle. Large enough to put under the filter and catch 99% of the oil from the filter. Kind of like a fishermans piss bucket. A quick wipe and your done.

Allen Hence: Fram = Junk Wix Racing/Napa = Quality |
I just changed my oil. I used K&N oil filters, punched a hole in the top and they did not drain. Anyone know why?
