Default Corrosion on Fountain windshield issue

I had a new shorty windshield installed on my 38 last year, have the boat religously covered and I also use it all of the time, rinse, etc. and about 60% of the powder coat is now corroded underneath. Anyone have a solution (not extreme like replacing again)??

Viaqua,

Sorry I don't have a solution for you, but it peaked my curiosity. I have a 2001 38 and would love to change my windshield out. How did it work out for you? Did you do it yourself? How much did it set you back? Any pics?

Thanks in advance.

That windshield really looks great on your boat. If you got the parts from Fountain maybe they would be willing to send you some new parts? Try giving them a call. Worse come to worse painting seems to hols up better than powdercoating - at least it did on my old Baja's swimplatform. Good luck with it.

I called Fountain and asked Robert-supposedly the "guy" , and asked about warrany. I would say his reaction was just short of laughing. It is a major deal to R/R it and I agree prepping and painting it properly will work but what a pain.

I know this will spark some debate, but the idea that you would ask Fountain for some support help is a JOKE!! They never want too give you a break on PRICING and try and get some real TECH help from them, you might as well be talking to the MAN IN THE MOON!!!

I agree. After 4 years of trying, it is absurd to get a POSITIVE reaction out of them. Without naming names, there a few decision makers in the warranty area and customer support that either have no power to give anything because their hands are tied to some whipping post or they are simply inept. I think they have strict orders to find any loophope available. They really do not get it and wonder why their fan base is eroding. If you look at the quarterly reports of the company, they are awful. Sure, they build the fastest hull for the money and Mercruiser has done a nice job of mating but when it comes to "issues" they fall on their face. Enough about that. I just am looking for a solution to a once again, design flaw.

I had a ton of powercoat problems on my 36 Concept I owned...just a freakin' lot of bubbled powdercoat everywhere. Concepts answer was to give me a spray can of paint that matched the same tint of white. My boat was only 8months old when this started croping up. I re-spray about everything trying to fix this problem! This bubbling is caused by moisture getting under the powder coat. This happened because Concept powdercoated the parts then drilled the holes in them thus breaking the seal of the powdercoat to the metal. Except for the bow rails where people grab them an dscratch them and a dock hand tied a rope to one rail and rubbed the powder coat off in 1 minute! All I did was fix powdercoating problem on that boat.

If the bubbling is coming up near screw hole this is the problem or if you scratched the power coat while grabbing the windshield mositure will infect it there too.

FeverMike: It is actually just materializing in nearly every area now. At first it was where it was drilled (by Fountain) and now about everywhere. To remove this thing is nuts but it looks like the only solution. A shame given the time and $ I have into it. Many thanks for comments from all.
