I'd stick with carbs, avoid EFI.
It really sounds to me like electrical issues. Doesn't take much noise to confuse software. And confused software acting on noise can easily over lean a given injector. Or, noise on the line from the ECU to the injector can also result in no or too little fuel. The higher the power, the less the safety factor, so a little problem results in big dollars.

) Most all of the issues with interference were caused by MSD boxes. Merc didn't have any problems with it since they didn't use an MSD box. They used that ecm for about 10 years without issue. The newer Mefi 4's do not have that problem. I don't know of anyone that has had an engine failure do to interference.About 98% of the engines I build are efi. I surely wouldn't be building them or using a Mefi if I thought the potential was there for a failure do to interference. At the level that this owner is at, efi is the way to go. A 1000+ hp carb engine will not have the protection (especially knock protection), drivabilty, economy, resale, etc as an efi engine.
At this point, I have a good idea of where the problem(s) lie, but I can't say for sure. What I can say is that there is NO good reason that this engine shouldn't go for 300 hours. This engine is nothing new, nor is it ground breaking technology. This has been done before many, many times.
While I occasionally appreciate the simplicity of a carb engine, converting it to a carb would be a crime.

While you are correct on some level, it's not that bad. The older Mefi 3's were susceptable to RF interference (not Reggie Fountain

The vast majority of electrical issues are due to connectors. Wires get involved as water and corrosion starts to seep under the insulation, generally starting at a connector. Corroded copper can lead to cross talk.
You are right, there are lots of similar motors out there. That's why assuming its mechanical seems very unlikely.

I'm not talking about RF interference, although that does happen too sometimes. I'm talking about lousy and/or corroded connectors and wires.

Although that will not completely eliminate any corrosion issues, it's cut them to an almost non-existent level. I have some harnesses that are over 7 years old that don't have any corrosion on them yet after being in salt water that long. I'm not saying it can't happen. I just saying that we take as many precautions as we can to prevent it from ever happening.
However, I do understand what you are trying to say.
