Ragged I think it's a great question, I saw the same thing. Only thing I can think of is something to make it more durable like a spray in bedliner. I was considering a similar product to linex for my custom dry stack cradle to minimize potential rust.

That's correct, it's basically a bed liner coating to help prevent corrosion and to add texture to it so you can easily step on it and not slip. As an added bonus it looks really good! Hard to tell in my pics but it's a purple metallic and looks amazing in the sun.
I caution you though, It has to be done right because if there are any open spots water will get in and eat the metal from the inside.
