NON step 35 Top Speeds

I'm sure there is a thread on this but ,I just did the top ends on my boat. I went from totally stock 454's including exhaust and did heads ,cams ,intakes ,carbs and exhaust .I did a small roller 575/575 lift any way I'm guessing close to 500 hp. What speed should I be seeing with this hp? Thanks Robert

How fast did it go before you did the top ends and what were the rpm's at ?

excalibur82 08-14-2015 07:57 AM

I was seeing in the summer like 68/69 at 4800 26 bravo ones
depending on how many people.

Assuming you have 1:50 gears that's about 13% slip. Try to get the engines spinning 5200-5300. Might have to go to a 25 and you could see 72ish possibly. Then again its a lot of trial and error to see what pushes your boat the best. I think I tried 5 sets before I settled on some.

That's what it did with the old engines . I'm hoping mid to high 70's with new set up. Just curious what 500 hp should do in it.

With the right props I think it might go mid 70's , when I was making 625 mine would run right around 80 fresh water slight chop

green lightning 08-14-2015 10:06 AM

A friend of mine had a single step 35 with hp 500's and it went 77 on gps

barron 08-14-2015 10:41 AM

92 35' with healthy 525's touch over 80 with lite a lite load

Green is spot on when trying to get top end from what I've seen. These boats like a 1-2". Dead flat I drop a couple mph.

dandercam1 08-16-2015 10:25 PM

Always allot of factors go into estimating top speed after modifications but with merc hp 500's a 35 non step should run low to mid 70's. If you make the 500 horsepower your hoping for that's probably about what you can expect. What heads and exhaust are you running?

excalibur82 08-19-2015 12:16 PM

I am running Emi exhaust, Pro maxx aluminum cylinder heads, dart single plane 850 holley, crane 1.7 rockers and a roller cam 575/575 112 lobe .

dandercam1 08-19-2015 05:42 PM

Ok I believe the promaxx heads are what use to be patriot cylinder heads. Assuming a 9-1 compression ratio or higher I would say easy 500+ horsepower. Once you get it propped right you should see mid 70's

excalibur82 08-24-2015 07:24 AM

Took the boat out hit 75 gps no problem. That was with three people 3/4 of fuel..

253 08-27-2015 09:41 AM

What kind of water were you in, dead flat or 1 ft. chop, mine likes at least a 1ft. chop

Was kind of flat alittle chop. Going back this weekend. What speeds are you seeing and what power

253 08-29-2015 08:16 AM

150 gal. of gas, 4 people, tool boxes, 2 anchors, loaded heavy on flat water 80-81, on 12 - 18" chop 83-84 on gps.,
I should unload all my junk so she could run.

253 I recall you saying you had a strong set of 540's in yours. Any Idea of what kind of power your making? Sounds like your making 600+ a side?

Fountainfunatic 08-30-2015 05:16 PM

Our Flat bottom likes a little chop as well. We have 2 500ci bbc making 625hp or so and on gps at wot we run 83mph give or take a few mph. Wot is 5800 rpms.

Fountainfunatic... what drives are on your 33?

253 08-31-2015 09:11 AM

I don't know the HP on mine, mild roller cams, Dart Pro1 CNC'd heads, Dart tall intakes port matched, Eddie Marine Thunder exh., MSD ignition boxes & distributors,
the 540's make very good torque and the Hydromotive Props work reall well.

The hydro's work better then the bravo's for you?

253 09-01-2015 09:09 AM

Yes, they are great all around performance, plane out easily and lift the stern for top speed, they don't need to be trimmed out as much as Bravo1 props .

dandercam1 09-28-2015 04:15 PM

Got "THUNDERSTRUCK" running on all 16 cylinders now. Saw 99 mph on gps this weekend

Hey Green Lightning. You must have my old boat bought out of Maryland. Always loved that boat and was sorry the guy I sold it too neglected it badly and it was a pig when I sold it for him. Do you still have it? Would love to see recent pics. John

Green do you still own it or 315duramax who states he bought it? What's the story behind the damage since the only feedback is the boat hit something. No kidding it hit something.

110mph.....35 lightning...blown 540s.....1000hp each.....upriver.....hydromotive 28s.

kreed 03-14-2017 07:07 AM

Does anyone have an accurate weight for these older flat bottom 35 lightnings? When I put my (1989 35 lightning, Bravo 1, 454MAGS ) speed and HP numbers into the BAM SPEED CALCULATOR , its giving me a weight of about 8000 LBS.....does that seem about right? The boat runs 68 MPH bone stock....I have a pr of 496(625HP) going in the boat, and the calculator is saying 85-87 MPH.....so Im curious how accurate this is.

I think the 8000lb is close as a dry number , the speed calculator is only as good as the info you put in like the slip numbers

ICU on here ran his 95 step hull across the scales and I think it came in around 8600-8800. That was with bravos.

Remember these 33-35 fountains are fly weight 30 foot boats.

253 03-14-2017 08:32 AM

approx. 8,000# dry, then add 160 gal. gas, 2 riders, 2 anchors, toolbox, 2 coolers, 50# of misc. stuff you never use and old flat bottom 35's get heavy, but still run very well.

How many rpms are you turning to get 110mph out of 28p props?

If it was a real boat it would have to turn between 6500 and 7300 rpm depending on the gears and slip numbers

kreed 03-14-2017 03:39 PM

Even with a gear change 110 is a tall order for those props!
