42' build thread.

I picked up a 98 42 fountain two months back. It was a trip boat that is being converted to stagger twin setup. I picked up a set of ssm 4's with net forged straight cut upper gears that are fresh. Motors are going to be 515 ci with either 10-71's or 12-71's. That should put them at 800-900 hp. Mild thunder has been helping me with choosing parts that will get me to my goals. I'm going to build the motors but most likely going to take them up to Joe and mike to dyno them. The boat is going up to glass dave in a few weeks for him to work his magic on. As of right now we are going to do a 19.5" on center and a prop shaft height of either 3/4-1 inch above the bottom. I plan on running 5 blades so that should work nicely.

. I got it stripped and ready for glass dave.

Cool project. Where are you going to boat with her when it's done?

indysupra 11-01-2015 05:22 PM

Lake Michigan/Erie, Cumberland. We will probably still boat alittle at Monroe.
We have wanted to boat in big water and hit up pib but we were always scared with my 31 and the weak drives/ supercharged engine combo. Really excited now that the project is underway.

Ran-Dom 32 11-01-2015 06:31 PM

That should rock when done.. So looks like someone pulled the center engine & has been running her as a side by side , any details on how that set up worked?

indysupra 11-01-2015 06:43 PM

I don't have any details on the previous conversion. I don't think they ever ran it.

Little update. Sold my motors and decided to buy rob's scorpion racing engines. Once I get those down here I'm
Going to sell off the 250 blowers and carbs and then change to the larger 10/71's. With chillers and 8-10lbs that should put them at a solid 900 plus hp. Does anyone want to guess on speeds?

110 to 115 when dialed in.

indysupra 11-21-2015 06:32 PM

Al you were talking about when this hull starts to get outa control. I want to ask everyone what speed they have seen the big step hull get out of shape? Is there some things I need to do now to help with it since I'm building it for big power. I know glass dave has some ideas. Chip from competition marine had some advice also. What is everyone's thoughts. Thanks.

ARB38 11-21-2015 07:39 PM

I really do not know what speed that they become tough to drive. RBH who has several real fast 42's had one and told me that it was a handful. I think that is was over 120 that it became an issue.

The power has been ready to drop in for awhile now and I have all the parts to get the boat in the water. Boat is supposed to be ready to be picked up any day. Should get exciting soon!

Have been making good progress the last few days. I should be putting the starboard engine in soon.

Starboard engine is In and mostly rigged, pickups on, drives on, mocking up steering now. Need to slightly modify the wing plates on the Bridgeport tomorrow.

areyouliving 07-18-2016 06:06 PM

This looks awesome. Can't wait to see it hit the water.

wow! this is very interesting plumbing for air intake AND exhaust!!!

Unlimited jd 09-12-2016 04:59 PM

Is this mofo wet yet???

indysupra 09-12-2016 05:40 PM

That's intercooler piping that you see. JD it is ready I'm going to be taking it to work with me this week and running it after work at the lake to get the tune done. I was planning on taking it to Cumberland with me last week but it was just too close and I Felt like I was going to be rushing the tune so I just took a friends boat.

Unlimited jd 09-12-2016 05:57 PM

Smart move, good luck

Why the exhaust wrap? I always wondered when a intercooler is piped like that doesn't all the right angles restrict flow?

indysupra 09-13-2016 07:51 AM

The exhaust wrap is because I had to put the exhaust close to the Pcm and distributor. As far as the bends they are 3.5" mandrel bends. They won't restrict the flow.

indysupra 09-13-2016 07:54 AM

And the exhaust had to route to the outside of the transom assemblies because of how close I'm running the drives. I had to cut the inner plates as it was so there was no room for anything to go between the drives.

Wildman_grafix 09-13-2016 09:27 AM

Wow that must be close. Did you have someone local there do the mandrel bends? I used to live in Indy so just curious.

Can't wait to see what this thing ends up running, I forget what did you end up at for HP?

indysupra 09-13-2016 02:52 PM

It's 4-5 inches away and will be fine I'm sure but the one time I eat an impeller or clog a strainer I don't want to have to replace a harness. I think it makes it look all business. The mandrel Bends you can just buy and then as you can see from the picture I cut them and then weld them to make the pipe. Same principle of how they do exhaust also. I always buy my aluminum mandrel vans from frozen boost.com. That's also where the intercoolers it from, pretty nice stuff at a great price. Power wise Professor Haxby said 925-1000 with the pulleys I have now.
