Where are all the fountains going
there are less fountains for sale in oso than cigarettes .its a good thing for us fountain guys more value
|
Clean, well maintained boats are getting harder to find. It took me 1.5 years to find the right 38 Lightning late last summer. It is getting more difficult to find a truly clean no excuses boat, the fleet is getting older and older.
|
Fountains are becoming less relevant since Reggie left. Less models, no new models, no significant changes to existing models, no marketing. Hope I'm wrong?
|
New boats are over priced and few are built

Way overpriced for 15 years +!
|
Obscenely overpriced and absolutely zero innovation. Look at the 2017 38ft for sale 428k And it still has the same cheap looking plastic cockpit with the machine screws drilled into the fiberglass 10-15 years ago was conspicuous consumption and you had the nostalgia that goes with Reggie. If they don't reinvent themselves the great Fountain brand is not going to exist.

Not true. Retail price for a new Donzi, Fountain, Baja twin I/O is the same as 10-15 years ago. The "creative" financing made them affordable and was able to put many more people into a performance boat. Much different scenario now.
|
Why would you pay $428k for a 565/bravo boat when you could buy this for the same money? http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...-s-o67951.html

"Creative financing" has nothing to do with retail cost of a new boat. Well maybe a little, it helped people buy these new over priced boats even if they really couldn't afford them which helped manufacturers keep new prices inflated. Without 40% down a new boat owner was upside down from day one. To be able to buy a 4 year old boat with minimal hours for .60 on the 1.00 well........ |
Fountain has a branding issue down the road if they plan to continue. The hull design with the beak and low slung aft end is their image, has been for close to thirty years and may be getting a bit old. People are buying the used boats because the prices are approachable and they like the design. People also buy old Corvettes,Ferrari's and Porsche's but new different ones are being built for those customers wanting the brand in new clothing unlike Fountain.
and Maybe, just maybe there's no one left to design a new hull. |
just look at the new cockpit interior of the new 38 and that will answer your question
|
The new 38 cockpit is hideous. The 09 cabin with the wood and the 07+ cockpit were good looking. I don't think it's a hull isssue. These are still some of the most efficient hulls out there. I mean cig hasn't changed their external appearance in eons. Paint and interiors will do it. They screwed the pooch on that 38.
On top of that as far as pricing goes I'd love to know the exact cost of the 565/xr package. Merc pricing is high. Likely around 50k or more for each motor/drive |
The times are changing and the new big boys want the new big names in the industry. Not that fountain is not a good boat aby more but when we where growing up for me it was always like oh wow there go's a fountain or a cig. Now days its the ol's and the nortech's that get that a bit more. So yes if you are going to spend 500k on a boat I would pick the ol or nortech that may be older over the fountain or cig. Just my thoughts
|
Nortech isn't even building much in the way of V performance boats right now. There are people who will buy older for the same and there are people who will buy new. Always been that way. I think the 38 may have sold already if it had better paint, cockpit and cabin.

That lightning is priced way outta my league, but even if I could afford it those fountain logos plastered all over it would have to go. Everyone recognizes a fountain. And you have to question the two front seats. They just don't say 428k. And one of my gripes is that the front hatch on Fountains has always looked like an afterthought. The fit and finish is all wrong.Just glass it over....I don't use it anyway.

Cigarette has no problem selling $1M 42's, 46's and even 50's. They are a timeless design, hold value better than ANY other brand, and quality is unmatched. That being said, Fountain has a lighter, faster, cheaper hull. Now that they are almost all 10+ years old they are depreciating rapidly and easily affordable. The new boat is going to be a hard sell because the people who are buying new boats in today's economy are buying better built, more expensive boats. That, and the color scheme and interior is pretty much garbage.

Most likely bucause the 565NA powered Fountain would still walk off and leave the 1100hp Nortech.

:chill-pill: Ok, here is a 700/6 boat for $50k less http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...un-o67601.html

And it's due for a motor refresh lol
|
Still a lot more boat for similar money! For $428k it better come with a truck load of bravos and a credit to have the interior completely redone!

Ummmm....Yeah, a low slung transom is really not desirable...hence the obsession w MTI and Skaters w Bussels. And why would someone want/need to design a "new hull" when it is STILL arguable the fastest/safest hull on the water. The interior on the new boat was an abortion...and must be re-thot...agreed. However, the hull should not be changed. A new top cap w updated/higher end finishes would make a huge impact. U sit at any Boating event anywhere and watch boats run down the lake/ocean and 9/10 people will agree that there is nothing that looks better running than a Fountain. And they are usually walking every other $1MM Vee Hull st the same time.

There is half as many all boats for sale. Not just Fountain. The Fountain needs a staircase galley sliding door though.

Once all the good used ones are sold you will start to see the new ones sell. This is a sign of things to come, Stock market is up, houses are being built another boom is on the horizon expect boat sales to rebound.

If u re-read my epically genius comments (as they always are), u will note that I agree that Ftn needs to update interior. However, I am also stating that Nor-Tech interiors typically look like Craig Sagers wardrobe. |
Reading is hard!
|
Also wouldn't this be the same question asked at the beginning of the poker runs as they are pulling away from the pack? Lol
|
New boat prices pulling far away from buying used and redoing / refurbishing. Good, clean used boats are selling much better than they were a few years ago. Agree 100% on Fountain hull but interiors, cockpits and dashboards seriously need updating.
