Go east from Oakland, you mean? Oakland=Shinnecock Inlet.

Next stop east, Ocean: Montauk, approx 50 miles.
Next Stops east, Peconic Bay: Anything your heart desires: Shelter Island, Claudio's in Eastport, you name it.

But I think the consensus was to start in Hecksher Park, make Oakland's the midpoint, then turn around and go West again and home to the GSB.

Nope, FF35 said east from OAKDALE...the actual starting point is in Oakdale in the Connetquot River...see some earlier posts. It might not be a bad idea to have another route meeting in a couple of weeks. Just a quick and dirty at a place where we can talk without interuption. I would volunteer my office but it is in New Jersey! Anybody agree, if so suggestions for a venue??
We have come so far, I would like not to have things get confused and feel a face to face meet is in order. Please comment.

Route Meeting: Sure! The sooner, the better. I'm avail this week. How about right there Oakdale/Heckscher Park?

Tripps, you know the neighborhood, any good place to meet?

Or we meet where we always meet, at the Gull in Babylon ...

Again I do not think Moriches makes sense. You are under estimating the shoals outside the inlet on the ocean side. Because you guys know them cold doesn't help people from the Finger Lakes etc. Don't forget that several boaters are coming from far away who don't know these waters. The routes in my mind have been set a month ago and were decided based upon many considerations.

Flipping or reversing the route path to take in account a smoother ocean made sense. To me revisiting the route plan at this point doesn't. Especially when you are advocating stuff that the more reasoned soul would consider to be dangerous. Read the markings on the charts guys. I think the route should stand and if others don't want to take that route, then don't.

I am not trying to rain on Peconic's parade or anyone else's for that matter. There is no reason that we can't create a new run in June/July/August etc. Fact is we should. We hoped this would be the forerunner to new routes. We already have over 30 boats who are signed up as it is layed out now.

:) :) :)

I think we need to focus on an orderly tie up while all of the boats amass. The meeting time is set now for 8:30 AM. I am sure some will be late, but at what point to we set out. Who makes the call. So many boats, screaming accross the water won't work. There is a bay constable at the mouth of the river and the Suffolk county police are stationed right there as well. If we use radio's, what channel. Who leaves first? Should we be in groups? When to we start to set that groups up? The last thing we need is 30 plus boats ripping across the bay like a B motorcycle movie. This is not a race. These are clearly not all the questions that need answers.

I still remember the last Poker Run on the bay a few years back here. It was in many places out of hand and quite dangerous to the participants and the locals. There are sail schools with 10 -13 year olds in Bellport Bay, Morriches bay and over by Fire Island. Nothing like zipping at 80 and seeing 25 Sailfish in front of you. How about the crab pots and the buoys do switch in places.

We need a level of control and focus. Some order and some rules. I think these items should be what we are focusing on, not changing the route. We are self policing here.

Thoughts????

Upon re-reading recent posts it appears that the route issue has become a bit muddy and reopened to discussion. I believe some of my own posts have misled some of you and indicated that we should consider changes to the route. This was not my intention. The fact that there are now so many participants, an open forum on this matter will only lead to confusion and make this subject a "bone of contention". With an eye toward avoiding this and as the originator of the thread, I feel it is my responsibility to state that the route has already been established. A route meeting in February decided the run would be from the Connetquot river east through the bay and the Hamptons with a stop for lunch at Oaklands and thence, weather and seas permitting, outside westbound to Fire Island inlet and back to Flynn's (or a similar place) for those who are interested. Considering the potential number of boats, I feel it best to stick with what has been decided with the exception of the route reversal which will be finalized at the driver's meeting on May 14th. We need to maintain solidarity on this to avoid any confusion and discontent. I do hope I have not offended anyone and am looking forward to a great time with some terrific people and machinery!

We live here and we were just trying to help. Taking the outside route is a chancy endeavour, and planning on the morning simply increases your odds. Those who have qualms w/ Moriches should stay away from doing the outside totally, because if the chit hts, Moriches is the only place to duck into in a 50 mile stretch .. and then it'll be limited visibility etc.

I'm fine with going from Heckscher to Oakland's and back either way, we do it all the time (mostly on the inside ...)

The biggest hassle is getting stuck in the bay, and in mid May, getting out to push doesn't sound attractive.

These are the tides for Moriches Bay for May 15:

3:43 AM Low 0.1
9:23 AM High 0.5
3:52 PM Low 0
9:54 PM High 0.6

With an 8:30 start,. we should be ok.

One remark on charts in these waters: Deeply mistrust them. The ground is shifting around like crazy, and this Winter was rough. We usually sound out the trouble spots at the beginning of the season, we keep our Seatow membership paid up, and Seatow on the speeddial ...

Peconic 03-29-2004 04:45 PM

A maybe not so trivial point: Are we sure that Oakland's has the space for all the boats? They usually have a hard time with more than 3 transients ...., and the place is packed with fishing machines

tripps 03-29-2004 07:56 PM

Uh-Oh, I think we should have a meeting sooner than May 14 so we can get some logistics settled and secured before the 14 th. Whats good for everyone in location,Middle western suffolk? How about the last place you guys had it ? I think Peconic will bring the map!!! On a monday ,tues, wed, or thurs,so it will be quite, not crowded. The cops can't do anything about a couple of boats riding around, can they??? Just take it easy till no one is looking:eek:   . Im quite sure that the Oar house in patchouge ,on the water would love us on a tuesday nite!!! Tripps

Peconic,
We appreciate the help and thank you. Getting stuck in the bay, particularly east of the Smith Point bridge, the narrow channel to the west are all points of issue. These are the kinds of things that we need help on isolating, documenting and getting the info out to all. Perhaps you,Tripps and I can get together locally for some further discussion. If we can surface issues we can address them. Any input is as valuable as gold. I am going to PM you with my info, please call when you can. I think Eric has a trip planned to the Islands, we still have time to work around that.

Again, Welcome aboard!!:D :D
