South Shore Thunderboat Blast!

It is a bit early but I am curious to see if there would be any real interest in a Funrun on Long Island Sound. I do not know the first thing about setting up something like this but it would think it should not be too difficult. I trailer a 29 out of the Port Jeff, LI area and would like to set something up for the early part of the season...maybe first or second weekend in May or the like. Let me know whos out this way.

We're in tell me more Lighting Strikes will be there

Tricky919 12-04-2003 06:31 PM

Tricky's in......Let me know when and i'll be there........

carney 12-06-2003 02:15 PM

Go for it , post it , we will come, just like field of dreams.

gferdon 12-08-2003 09:36 AM

My thought was a single day deal, leave in the AM from a prearranged start go to wherever will serve lunch, etc. and return. This might not appeal to someone that has to trailer any type of distance. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I was thinking of starting in western LI sound and running to Huntington Harbor for lunch at a place called Coco's. They have a docking facility that would hold about six boats or twelve if we "double park". I would have to check and see if they are OK with it, can't see why not since at that time of year they probably do not have too many customers using the dockage. Let me know.

FastFountain35 01-04-2004 11:31 AM

how about great south bay to hamptons theres plenty of docking. just a thought

gferdon 01-05-2004 05:19 PM

That could work, I have quite a bit of time on the South Bay but others may find the low water intimidating especially with labbed props!! Where are you located?

G-

FastFountain35 01-05-2004 06:02 PM

patchogue, plenty of water if you stay in the chanels ,they are super easy to follow i dont know why people are so intimidated by the south shore its not that shallow.,i keep my boat in moriches

gferdon 01-06-2004 05:58 PM

OK, South Shore sounds good and the water is a bit more predictable...not that it can't get snotty but I feel it would be a bit more hospitable then the Sound. Let's see who else hits the thread. BTW, do you know a guy in Patchogue named Eric who runs a performance boat shop? I was at a shop that had two blown big blocks he was about to put into a 35...that you?? Later,

G-

gferdon 01-08-2004 09:15 AM

This is getting interesting!

FastFountain35 01-08-2004 01:15 PM

the south shore is definitly nice, let me know i will go any where, there is alot of boats with horsepower over here; yes i met eric and the guy with yhe 35, the are very nice, what length are you.

gferdon 01-08-2004 08:08 PM

I have a 29 with twin 6.2's, just had the props labbed and am anxious to see what was gained...was running 71 with stock 26's hope to see 73 or more.

Dutrasystem,

In this case, size does not matter! Besides, a 24 Superboat probably rides as good as my 29, especially on the bay.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

G-

PS How about some pictures of these Long Island area beauties? (Boats that is)!

FastFountain35 01-09-2004 04:30 PM

trying to figure out how to do that im new at this computer sh*t.

PatBrennan 01-09-2004 09:56 PM

I have a 27 Fever in NWNJ. I'd be willing to tow since I've always wanted to boat in Long Island, just needed someone to show me around. Lemme know when.

gferdon 01-10-2004 02:40 PM

PatBrennan

We would all be glad to show you! I just suggested to someone on another thread that he check us out...has a 10 meter that's being re-powered and updated cosmetically. Why do I get the feeling I will be running at the back of this pack?

Later,

GF

Mark D 01-10-2004 05:01 PM

Man I am jealous of what you guys are cooking up.
Be sure to take some cool pics & post them for all of us.

FastFountain35 01-10-2004 09:20 PM

lets set a date , im getting more pumped by the day. theres nothing i would rather do , then go cruising , then talk about what a blast we just had.

gferdon 01-11-2004 08:14 AM

Now, I am even salavating like a Pavlov's dog! I can't believe it's only 7 degrees outside!! Common Spring!

carney 01-11-2004 08:45 AM

Is there a good place to leave trailers? How deep is the water where you will be running. What rt's would some one from upstate N.Y. take to get there? I would come down 86 to 81 then lost.

FastFountain35 01-11-2004 10:34 AM

plenty of spots. anywhere from 4 to 30. i will post the best way to go soon. ps this is gferdons show not mine. just trying to help make it happen. im even more pumped now.

gferdon 01-11-2004 11:12 AM

Hey, as I said in the beginning of the thread, I am not an expert. We need to make this a team effort, let's all throw out the ideas and settle on a plan. Right now, time is something we have plenty of! This is by no means a final decision but I feel a good start would be in Patchogue area with a run east to the hamptons or shinnecock inlet and return. For those coming on trailers, a good place to launch would be Heckshire State Park. It is open to the public, has plenty of parking for trailers and is cheap...$6.00 per day. The only drawback is no overnight parking without a permit but since this is a one day deal (yes?) it should not be a factor. Most of the other launching ramps in the area require a town permit or $50.00 fee...hey, that's 25 gallons of gas! Anyone with any more launching ramp ideas?

Carney...You will have to make your way south to either the GW Bridge or the Tappan Zee and south on the Thruway to the Cross Bronx Expressway. The deal here is to plan getting thru that area (NYC) as early or late as possible to avoid traffic. I will give you a couple of ideas as the time draws near and others on the thread may have input as well. You need to know that in studying your maps you can NOT pull a trailer on any "parkways" in New York and most parkways are located on Long Island. Again, I can help you with that when we all decide on a date and place. Talk with you all soon.

GF

PS What do you figure the odds are that Reggie will join us for this little junket??

gferdon 01-11-2004 11:15 AM

BTW we need to think of a name for this run. I am terrible at that stuff so how about you "creative" types out there stepping up?

G-

FastFountain35 01-11-2004 01:53 PM

once we find a name ,can we post it on the genral discusion forum to let more people know about it.

gferdon 01-11-2004 08:51 PM

Sounds good to me...!

FastFountain35 01-13-2004 01:56 PM

so did any one think of a name.

Tricky919 01-13-2004 04:14 PM

Is this run going to be in the LI Sound, because us guys on the ny, conn. side would like to join and going to the ocean side of LI would be real expensive........

FastFountain35 01-13-2004 07:26 PM

we have not made a final decision.

FastFountain35 01-13-2004 07:28 PM

do you have a trailer.

Tricky919 01-14-2004 03:44 PM

No, i don't.......

fountainicbm#1 01-15-2004 01:49 PM

i would be very interested in doing this run!!!
I live in conn.

FastFountain35 01-17-2004 02:49 PM

what hppend. lets get this thing floating.

Hey guys,

I am a former Baja Outlaw owner who moved up to a 29 Fever this past November. I boat along the South shore of Long Island and would love to "sign up" for a "fun run". There are a number of very cool places to eat anywhere from Lindenhurst to the Hamptons and along Fire Island as well. I agree that shallow water can be a real issue in the Great South Bay even with a Chart GPS. But I think we could work that out by agreeing to follow those "who know" in certain spots before hand.

Maybe we could include an Ocean run as part of the day... From Moriches Inlet to Fire Island and then eat at Tequilla Jacks (Steel drums, very Island) by Atlantique.

There are several friends of mine who also seem interested but they are not Fountain owners... Which I understand is fine...

I am open to the North Shore as well... Just need a county ramp to launch from.

Count me in...
Steve

Hey Gary, I included a picture of the Fountain...

Hey Steve,

It was good talking with you Sunday. Glad you found the site and already signed up...i'm impressed! As mentioned, this is not limited to Fountains...all are welcome. Still have not nailed down a date, time and place. I am going to step up here and suggest that for this run we make it Great South Bay for reasons discussed. Also, we seem to have the bulk of interested parties on the South Shore. I also suggest that if this works well we do a North Shore run as soon as feesible, perhaps in June prior to the holiday. Now it's just a matter of a date and actual starting place to meet. I will arrange to meet any out of area guys at whatever public ramp we decide upon. My suggestion was Heckshire Park, cheap and dirty. I think FastFountain had some ideas too...let's hear 'em!

We must be kindred souls since I was going to suggest that same run...bayside eastbound out to Moriches Inlet and, weather and water permitting, oceanside westbound to Fire Island inlet and back to Tequilla Jacks. Good water all the way and a beautiful run. The only question I have is if any of the restaurants will be able to handle a large group? Let me know what you think...anyone.

Hopefully only three more months to go till we can uncover these beauties. Regards to all.

GF

Steve,

Here's mine. Talk with you soon.

gferdon 01-20-2004 09:13 AM

Steve,

Forgot to mention that I love your graphics! BTW, did you get the bimini top? Also, I am sure you are aware that storage space is not Fountain's long suit. You might want to check out "Fountainclimber" he is a member who has done some really nice work on his 29, especially in the cabin. Later,

G-

FastFountain35 01-20-2004 02:08 PM

now were talkin. s . shore it is, and hechshire it is.just have to find a place that can handle a sh*t load of speed boats , that is the only kind of boats on this planet correct!!!!!we can also go from moriches to shinecock, inside or outside . and it is absolutley beautiful out there. there are place to hold alot of boats. if we decide on eastbound, i will make reservations.

gferdon 01-20-2004 06:44 PM

OK, now we're cookin'...I will plan on launching my boat from the Heckshire ramp and be there in plenty of time to help any unfamiliar types with launching and exit issues. The water at the entrance to the ramp can be tricky especially at low tide. Once you are 100' offshore you are good to go. We can pickup guys further east, like FastFountain35 (Moriches) and proceed on the decided upon route (still open for debate) I think if all the guys who will be coming by water and in the area of Heckshire would meet us there we can make that the starting point. Also, just inside the entrance is a very large cove that is completely bulkheaded and rarely occupied, especially early in the season. I bet we could put 30 go fast boats in that area! I would like to get a list of all interested parties when you all have the time. Right now the only people I am sure of, beside myself, is FastFountain35 and Nolimits. Anybody trailering in I will make a point of helping as much as possible with directions, etc. Looking forward to seeing all of you, whoever you are!

G-

PS Let's start thinking dates...early May, mid May...whatcha' think? Should we plan a weather date (rain, wind, fog, crud...you know? Speak to me. Let's get some pics up too!

WetKitty42 01-20-2004 08:47 PM

I'm in,

Let me know

South Shore please!!

nolimits 01-20-2004 10:17 PM

So Wetkitty42 makes it 4. I have two others interested at this point and awaiting more info from me.

I think the route going through both Moriches and Shinecock requires a lead follow situation - due to low water. I have never done the Shinecock either in or out and understand it can be tricky. Also, while the bay route between the two is beautiful, there is an abundance of no wake zones (Dune Road). Not a problem for me, but takes quite a bit of time. What time would we want to start?

Tequila Jacks has ample boat docking, but the Casino at Davis Park is better. The docks there hold 200 boats. Captian Bills in Bayshore also is a good place. (Fuel there as well) We need to check what resturants are open in early May. I would be willing to do that once we agree on an area.

The boat ramp at Heckscher is perfect. Easy to get too, holds lots of boats, calm protected waters, hose and bathroom facilities and ample parking for tow vehicle and trailers. Mark the routes you take on the way out (on GPS) because it can be hard to find your way back in. Also some shallow water if you approach it from the west. (check a chart - look for surfaced ramp west of Nicoll Pt). Not real hard, but certainly much easier once marked. We could either all meet in there or perhaps at the mouth of the Connetquot River around Nichols Pt. The water is calm and there is fuel there.

I like mid May better as it increases the chances of open resturants and gets more heat into the game. I prefer a Saturday with Sunday as the alternate.

Might I suggest that once we agree on a route that we attempt to document it. Any suggestions on that?

Anyway thats all I can think of right now.

Great boat Gary, the wife and I liked the graphics...

FastFountain35 01-21-2004 03:21 PM

i know moriches to shinecock in the dark it is very easy.i say we start at 8:00am , by the time we get going, it will be 9:00am.

FastFountain35 01-21-2004 09:18 PM

how about the (south bay thunder boat blast!!!!)
