Default 496 HO advice

I have 27 fever with 496HO. Would like to get more performance out of engine without big sacrifice in reliability and durability. Any recommendations?

Need more detail??

What year is your 27?? What prop are you using?? What performance do you have now GPS Speed??

The cheapest thing you can do is change props to start with but need more info to really help you.

Will:

The boat is a 2005. prop is 28 pitch, bravo I drive 1:65 gears. Top speed was 71 gps at 5250 rpm with 35 gal fuel at factory. I get 69-70 gps at about 5000-5100 rpm with 1/2 tank, 2 passengers and gear. I think I remember those rpm numbers accurately. I get 66 mph with full tank at 5050 rpm. My numbers are mid summer in hot humid Tennessee. I would like to increase top end speed by 5 - 10 mph. Any advice will be appreciated.

thanks

Russell

Russell

Well I have good news and bad

Good news is that you performance is probably right on or really close for 425hp

Bad news is to get 5-10mph more you are going to have to Whipple or procharge your motor I am running a 500efi and only see 74mph

You can toy with getting a higher pitch prop and labbing it to meet you boat exactly but most you will gain will be 2mph and may not gain anything.

Here are some tips to get 1-2mph
If its not bolted down take it out, especially the bed cushin, I mean all of it bumpers, anchor, wife, cooler, covers, carpet, and run it low on gas. That is how Fountain got it to 71mph.

Now that your motor is broken in you may actually gain 1mph but only if its light.

Good luck and let me know how it goes, you may try a Hydromotive prop 24 pitch for your HP it may give you a little more top end but planing off will be slower.

don't try a 24 pitch! that would be great if you had 1.5 gears.

Your lucky, I would like to be where you are now.
I wonder if the 1.65 makes the difference. I have 02 xz 1.5
Fountain report said 68, I hit 68.5 gps once with a 28 bravo.
Usually 66-67 gps. With 26 bravo @ 5100. Have fun, JC

The cheapest speed I found is changing to AMS-OIL in the out drive. I think I got about 0.8 MPH by doing that. Hard to say. I did a couple of other things at the same time. Best to date is 69.4 GPS with a 26p bravo prop, 502 mpi. Usually in the 66-68 range depending on the load.

I remember meeting you at the shorgren display last summer.
I ended up getting a AMS-oil dealership because I have had such good luck with there products. You can order there oil from a number of places. Teague custom marine sells it mail order. You could also sign up with AMS-oil as a preferred customer get directly from AMS-oil at cost. I could get you a couple of quarts to try out also if you like. E-mail me at [email protected] if you want to get a couple of quarts of oil, I have a couple left over from last season.
I also met Reggie at shogren last Sunday. Interesting guy to talk to. Talked to him for about a hour. I liked the 35 lightning they had in there except of the price. Later
