PWC Riders are crazy

Going thru a no wake zone today in the busiest area of our lake,a girl on a PWC is idling directly across our bow, appears she doesn't see us,I am idling but hit full reverse to miss her, then I notice she is ON HER CELL PHONE.Do you need a phone to have fun on a PWC? Wish I could tell her dad what a ditsy daughter he has,but I guess he is paying for her phone anyway. Be careful out there everyone,it is a different world from the old days.I am trying to learn, but it's tough. Robert

I see a lot of REALLY stupid acts on the water, 95% are jet skiers.

Smitty 07-03-2005 08:20 PM

Re: PWC Riders are crazy

Why is it that every jet skier has to aim for your boat so they can jump the wake. What usualyy happens to me is they are jumping someone elses wake and don't see me coming about ready to run them over.

Isn't THAT the truth.....

Seems like they don't have a single clue what one of our boats would do to them if we run them over. We're only going to feel a bump, while we "blenderize" them.....

They just don't pay any attention at all....

Late yesterday afternoon we are returning from Captiva. Because the Gulf was kind of rough we decided to cut into Big Carlos Pass and take the intercoastal (25mph) down to Bonita Beach (home). The channel in that section narrows down so barely two boats can pass. Some idiot kid on a PWC passes us like a bat out of H, slows dowen immediately and starts doing the normal jet ski acrobatics less than 100 feet in front of us. I had to come off plane.

As Bugs Bunny said " What a maroon!"

Yeah I hate them too. They are so cheap that every scumbag can afford one to get on the lake. Yesterday one passed with 5 ft from my boat while I was anchored,it splashed my boat and almost ran over some swimmers, while running at full speed inside the 200 ft markers. While I was running I had to constantly dodge them. They need to be required to take a boaters safety course before they are allow on the water, or they could have a open season on them. :evilb:

I especially like the dozen plus PWCs that are buzzing around within 50 yds of every channel mouth, here in West Michigan, trying to jump the wake of every cruiser coming and going. As if it's not tricky enough navigating the boats coming in and out of the channel we have to dodge the darting PWCs on top of it. It feels like playing "Asteroids" in a boat. Time to add a joystick to the boat.

LOL @ rdp145! :D

Those are some pretty strong words for someone with less than 100 posts! :p

PWC's are not the problem. Most PWC OWNERS are very responsible. The problem is the children/friends of the owners. They don't take the water safety course. They have no clue about water safety.

I would be willing to bet that over 80% of the PWC accidents involved a PWC driver that was not the owner...

Just my two-cents...

I think the message that started from Magicfloat out there was to be careful because of all the imature, inconsiderate uninformed amount of jetski users out there (maroons). These are dangerous machines at the hands of many unexperienced children or people that act like spoiled children demanding their own space without any consideration for others. Not all jetskiers are idiots but the pompus showoffs that do not have a clue are setting a real bad example to the newbees and are making the sport look like only jerks can afford to use them.

Not to be disrespectful of the FEW responsible PWC operators I've seen, like I already stated, 95% of the idiot moronic acts I've seen on the water are from PWC operators. That's just reality.

I don't hate PWCs, I hate the idiot operators that don't give a damn about anybody else on the water and come so close to causing so many problems/accidents to people who are just trying enjoy their day on the water. You guys soudn like blow boaters compliangin about speed boaters. Theyre annoying, they cut in front of me, they're all bad people. blah blah blah. Im not gonna say that there isnt a problem, cuz there is with anyone on the water who isnt properly educated. Ive been riding pwcs for 13 years now started when i was 9 and passed the safety course. By the time i was 16 many more regulations were put on them. And we all nkow how most of us feel about the govt regulating our hobby based on what other people think, instead of just dealing with the few causing the problems. Thats my rant for now. There are many resposible PWC owners, you just dont coem in contact with them so you dont relize they're out there.

Should have titled my post "Some PWC Riders are crazy",I guess. My point was not to castigate the many responsible PWC riders out there( heck,I sold them for 10 years)but to call attention to the fact that you have to be way more aware now than in the old days. I just got a call from a friend(2:30 pm today), PWC accident a few miles above the lake where I had the incident yesterday, preliminary report, one dead :( . Everyone please be careful and keep a watchful eye,it's not just the PWC's,it's every type of boat.

Some of you are too uptight  ...sheesh, chill out, have a drink, go running, take a nap, punch your wife, or do something to relax, Magic's point is justified.

Some of these people have strong feelings about this because they've come close to hitting somebody. It get's your adrenaline pumping and you just want to choke the f'er, but in the end it's a life that's at stake, and a family for that matter. Your life will be affected too when you're sued in court as a result of the other's actions.

Hey there RDP.

Welcome to OSO.

You have been boating for 35 years.
I have been reading English for 35 years.

You got pretty defensive because somebody called every PWC rider a scumbag. I just re-read every post.

Does the above statement say that "every PWC rider is a scumbag?"

I thought it said that "every scumbag can afford one."

I believe that the intent of the author was to communicate the fact that PWCs are cheap and affordable for everyone, even scumbags.
NOT that every PWC rider is automatically a scumbag.

People should drive carefully... they should read carefully, too. :D

Your right about reading carefully, thats why you should reread the title of the thread. Have a nice day.

I know that all PWC riders have not been evaluated and declared insane... so I take the title "PWC riders are crazy" (like many titles of threads on OSO) with a grain of salt.

Rather than accept the fact that you turned "every scumbag can afford one" into "every PWC rider is a scumbag" you turn it around like I made a mistake.

Maybe the title should be "PWC riders can't accept when they are wrong."
:D :D It fits.

guns don't kill people, hte person holding it does

PWC's do not run around in crazy ways, the drivers do.

Only way to correct both problems is to educate responsible ownership of things we use in life.
Does not matter if it is a steak knife in the kitchen, or aquascooter out in party cove.
Responsiblity falls on the person that has possesion, in order to gain posession education needs to happen.
Once that is done, it is still a Maturity level of pride and respect that needs to happen.
Most have it, some don't, some decide to drink and reduce what they 'thought' they had.
Original post was to tell everyone to be safe, a reminder of the differneces of life and what people have, or don't have.

onesickpantera 07-05-2005 10:19 AM

Re: PWC Riders are crazy

The point is they are cheap, fast and can turn around and be headed in the opposite direction at a high rate of speed in a matter of seconds. Most people have no training on how to ride them whatsoever. I've had 2 close calls with PWCs.

One was a father and 3-4 year old daughter looking over their right shoulder(for what I don't know?) as they slowly angled in front of me. I would guess that they looked over their shoulder, and not where they were going, for 4-5 seconds at about 35-40 mph! I saw them coming from a distance and slowed down(I was cruising at 30mph or so), they still kept coming so I slowed some more, still kept coming so I got off plane to idle speed, they finally looked over and saw me, waved and took off in the other direction.

The other was a total idiot that decided he wanted to race me as I was getting on plane(at the time I had no idea he was trying to race). I started opening the boat up and I had an eye on him because he was close to me. He was ahead of me and kept looking over his shoulder at me. Okay, he's aware I am here, I'm going to veer off to the left away from him and open my boat up. I start doing this and he starts veering with me thinking I want to race! He is looking over his shoulder at me heading for a boat that is sitting anchored. I notice this and slow down and get off plane. He figures I don't want to race so he decides to quit looking at me and watch where he is going. Almost hits the anchored boat, cranks it to the left and cuts right in front of me. If I wouldn't have noticed where HE was going it may have been ugly. Followed him to shore and had a few words.

Sorry I know this was long winded but these two incidents both could have been ugly if I wasn't watching where THEY were going. This is two CLOSE calls I had. I could go on all day about the not so close moron moves I've seen them pull. But, they are out there and I deal with it.

No, not every PWC rider is an idiot. But the majority of them are!

Re: PWC Riders are crazy

Since were on the subject of lake lice, This weekend a friend of mine just 3 boats behind me was driving about 35 in a wide river when a jet ski came flying by on the right and a cuts in front of him, he turned hard but the ski ran right into the side of him. It hit so hard it killed the motor, knocked him on the floor and gave him a black eye. Another Ski ran up next to the guy laying in the water, picked him up and took off.
Then another bike shows up with 2 people and one gets on the crashed bike and tells me friend the the best thing he can do is get the He&+ out of here. So we waited for the cops to show up. Then we find out that the driver of the water lice is a cop and was drunk. He broke his leg and was busted up. The good news is the boat wasn't hurt.
I my friend would have been drinking he may not have cut the wheel so fast and that would have been one more death. :(

Racer, I am sorry this happpened to your friend. Am glad to hear he is OK.
I would still have the boat checked out.

As for the PWC, guess my comment on the maturity level and what some people have of don't have was not to far off base :( Not to mention the reduction caused from drinking

Re: PWC Riders are crazy

This whole thread is really quite simple to understand.

Are all PWC operators idiots? No. Of course not.

BUT the VAST MAJORITY of boneheaded, not paying attention moronic moves are by PWC operators. They don't pay attention, PERIOD. I see it every single time I go out on a boat. EVERY SINGLE TIME. What amazes me most is that there is not at least one death every single weekend.

I don't mean in any manner to disrespect the responsible PWC operators on this Forum. But you guys are in the extremely vast minority. And that is a fact.

Like we said not all of them are idiots just most of them! ;) Be happy you're the minority. :D

I drove a PWC for 4 years and had a blast on it. And I got "crazy" on it all the time, but it was ALWAYS away from other watercraft.

Like I said, I've seen some responsibe PWC drivers out there, and I like to think I was one of them. But there sure are a lot of people that don't pay attention on them.

Another good point that was brought up is a lot of the PWCs are "loaned out" for the quick ride. Do you guys toss your keys to your boat to just anyone?

Re: PWC Riders are crazy

Most of the people I see riding can't be more than 12 or 13 years old. I can't imagine how a parent would let a child get on one of those things. The best part was all his buddies on shore wanting to kick our AS*(&)& because we wouldn't leave before the water patrol go there.
If it makes anyone feel better most of the ski boats are just as bad, especially the ones pulling tubes.
