which boat would you choose and why (Cig -vs- Outerlimits)

I'm considering two boats:

The first is a 2000 37' Outerlimits (single step bottom) with staggered Merc 900SC and #6 dry sumps. Awesome paint 170 hours total. 50hrs since last complete rebuild by Eickert.

The other boat is a late 1999 42' Cigarette (straight bottom) with the same power and drives (Merc 900SC and #6 dry sump drives). This boat has 70 total hours - fresh water.

The price is the same for either boat.

I've owned a Cigarette before, but not an Outerlimits, so don't know much about them.

What do you guys think?

I would definitely go with the Cigarette. Bigger boat, fewer hours. And between these two it's hard to beat the Cigarette brand name. :)

32fever 01-29-2002 07:46 PM

I think you're one lucky s-o-b :D :D :D

NOt that I have any knowledge whatsoever on either boat, just post whoring.

But, if it were me, I'd probably opt for the OL. First, Cigs have great resale, but those damn OL are like cash cows. I wish I had bought a 95 or 96, but didn't have a pot to piss in back then. ;) At least now I have a dixie cup :)

Plus, I'd rather trailer a 37' boat than 42', if that is the case with you. Either way, awesome rides.

MnFastBoat 01-29-2002 07:48 PM

MHO if money was not a concern, I would go with the outerlimits
why, because I love em and there is not as many of them as cigs. At least compared to what I have seen.
They are both great boats.
It would be a great pleasure to be able to have your hard decission of CHOOSING ;) let alone actually owning either one.
2 of the best choices out there for top of the line.

JIMKID Motorsports 01-29-2002 07:54 PM

I personally would go with the outrlimitts much faster safe and stable boat and as far as resale boats like these are for gofast people and the outerlimmits is much faster boat and built to last handle just about any thing cigarette good boat but just paying for the name no performance

cigarette1 01-29-2002 08:05 PM

That's a nobrainer ... Cigarette 42 Tiger .. You did say 42' Tiger didn't you???

The OL is a sweet boat and maybe I would have to think twice if it were between the OL and a Gun. But, come on ... a 37 OL is not going to run with a 42' Tiger when the water wakes up.

Miller 01-29-2002 08:10 PM

I've been on the 37 in question and can attest to the way that boat has been maintained and run. If you have any questions about the boat, give me a call. BCC has my numbers or just email me.

Between the Tiger and the OT, I'd get the OT. I really like Cigarettes and the Tiger is awesome, but the OT in qestion is phenomenal. It blows away most others. That thing ROCKS! :D

Hustler 26 01-29-2002 08:14 PM

Boy I wish I had your problems. However I have riden both and in "my opinion" I would go with the 37 Outerlimits.

Let me ask you a question. Have you ever riden in an Outerlimits. One ride is worth a thousand opinion. You can't believe how well thy ride.

Dave M. ;) ;) ;)

cigarette1 01-29-2002 08:19 PM

I'd say Stinson would probably have the most experience driving(piloting) both boats with big power. What's he have to say about this??

Miller 01-29-2002 08:23 PM

Actually, Stinson was on the OT with me during my first run on that boat. Ask him when he reappears from his trip East.

cigarette1 01-29-2002 08:24 PM

Ken,

Did the Patriot stay local?

G

kwb 01-29-2002 08:39 PM

Gary - no Patriot is going up the Delta... (when I receive final payment)

Are you coming out to Miami? I think there is a Club 66 out there.... way down, underground....

Jassman 01-29-2002 08:43 PM

Before I finally bought my Active Thunder, I had looked at Cigerette,Outerlimits,Powerplay, and Sonic. If money were no concern and you had to have the best I felt on ride, cabin roominess and creature comforts, and fit and finish the Outerlimits won. It has a more effiecient bottom, better numbers, and one hell of a lay up, they have done alot to the boating industry in just a few short 8 years, too me they are the leader, and everyone else is trying to play catch up. The reason why I bought an Active Thunder 37avh, just as quick as the OTLTS, and built with the same integrity for less money. They are the Outerlimits of the future, one hell of a company that I'm proud to say I own a totally customized boat built to 99% of the same std at a better value. Check their web site out, I bet you can get a new boat for what you are paying for the used ones and have equal power. www.activethunderboats.com Go to latest news and graphics, Check out RaDiOAcTiVe. Good luck to you in your decision, between the two I would go Outerlimits. :D

cigarette1 01-29-2002 08:46 PM

Ken ... I'm not going to make it out to Miami this time ... issues ... and I need to stay above ground for a while

PhantomChaos 01-29-2002 09:16 PM

Kenny-

Do you really think this thread is gonna help make up your mind? :D :D :D :D :D

Madcow 01-29-2002 09:19 PM

There both great boats, but yoy gotta go with the Cig. They are built like tanks, and you will get an exeptional ride. Plus longer is better. Just ask your wife! :D

NW_Jim 01-29-2002 10:39 PM

:D

Cignificant 01-29-2002 10:39 PM

Again, I agree with others; "What a great decision to be able to make".

That said, I think these are two completly different boats. The Cig you are talking about probably has a full cabin - probably bigger than the OL. No doubt, the OL will be faster. Sit in them, ride in them, have a cocktail - you'll know which one you want. If you don't "feel the love", don't buy either one - neither is the boat you want.

puder 01-29-2002 11:58 PM

if you were gettign a cat go with a skater. If youa regoign vee go with a OL.

Last summer at the OPA races in NJ the pace boats was an OL and was the first one throughet cut heading to the ocean from what i head they got like 10' of air and kept on going and eth boat took it liek it was a 1' in the air. From everythign i have heard teh outerlimits is the ****. Hell i might even take a nice outerlimits over a skater! Search the achives i am sure you will find a bunch of thrades about outerlimits. From what i have heard here they are the toughest biult (beast in snotty water) yet are fast as hell and with the tightest quality control in layup.
The ones taht i have seen were frikkin amazing! Besides therea are tons of cigs but not to many OL and i think in terms of resale they will hold thier value better than a cig. Many people sem to be trading up to them. Tom FTM just got a 37 OL and is selling his PRISTINELY restored 38 cig.

PhantomChaos 01-29-2002 11:59 PM

Kenny..........is this your "old" boat??

32fever 01-30-2002 12:03 AM

I agree with Puder,

go with the kjlhasd ;o8yasdfg kasdf;oiha liahsdfglknasd ;olaidhf;df becuz alk sdoidc lkjasdio;234mknscsdo;hiasdf

:D :D :D :D
Thought you were going to get better at that? LOL!

kwb 01-30-2002 12:15 AM

Good replies so far... I like Cignificant's advise.

The Cig has the extended "cover girl" cabin. I think the OL has the better cabin for sure.

Norty - que?? Are ready for Miami bro??

puder 01-30-2002 12:19 AM

fever you get the prize for making fun of my typing of all the complaints i've gotten about my typing that one at least made me chuckle :D

Audiofn 01-30-2002 12:29 AM

KWB: You have to get a ride in a OL for sure. The step will make a difference and I bet ya the 37 will handle the rough as well as the 42 cig. I saw the rigging that they do at Outer limits and I have to tell you it is nothing short of perfection. I have never seen that much attention to detail in my life. Everything was 100%. Cigs are nice but no were near the Outerlimits. I then walked over to Formula and wanted to puke at the lack of attention to detail there. :( :(

puder 01-30-2002 12:30 AM

jon was it a new formula you looked at or yours???? :p

puder 01-30-2002 12:30 AM

:D sorry couldn't resist

boater31 01-30-2002 12:43 AM

you need to consider how and where you will be running the boat. if you are after speed, go for the otl. BUT... if you are looking for something to handle the rough stuff and be comfortable, get the cig. there is no better when the water gets rough. they are heavier and need alot of power to get speed. i have a 31' bullet and have been in other 35-38' boats and i can honestly tell ya that my cig is a smoother ride!! check the rigging on the cigs too. every one i have seen is top shelf w/ no corners cut. check w/ tres martin as he has rigged tons of em and you wont find a better job. the cigs arent as plush as some but i bet you wont be able to tear it up!! just mho!!

PhantomChaos 01-30-2002 01:15 AM

 :D  :D

kwb 01-30-2002 01:19 AM

Ya that's it! That's where I bought the boat. Lake Cumberland was great to work with.

Are you staying at the same Hotel as Anna and Jeffrey?

thisistank 01-30-2002 01:23 AM

All I can say is, I wish I had this problem!? Kenny you are a stud dude! Patriot was a sweet boat man. Have you thought about a gladiator?? Be the first in so. cal. ;)

I rode on a 47 Outerlimits in Miami with tripple 1300 HPs and #6's. The thing was insane!! Out ran the photo copter!

The guy was from south carolina, pulled the boat all the way to miami with a Hummer!! He was later put in prison for drug sales! boat was siezed I believe...Don't know where it is now?? Prob. pick it up for cheap from some seizure yard!

kwb 01-30-2002 01:29 AM

Hey Tank- ya I want a boat with #6's. It would be hard not go with another Cig - but I want to explore all the options (and a certain rude Cig dealer in FL is pushing me away from Cigs- and it's not Martin Marine, they're cool). I'm going to the Miami boat show - hopefully I'll get to see all the "good stuff"

thisistank 01-30-2002 01:33 AM

Well brother I will be looking forward to seeing what you get. With your track record I'm sure it will be 1st class!

Now who in their right mind would be pushing you away from cigs?? Uless you're talking dealer issues!

Better hurry up and get a boat bro. summer is coming...Havasu is just around the corner!! :D ;)

Tank

Eh, Kenny by the way check my thread on the scope web page. I have a question for you I think you can help with.

IDRPSTF 01-30-2002 02:31 AM

"So its like you meet the girl of your dreams, right"
"And you ask her to marry you"
"And then she takes you to her home town"
"And you meet all of hr friends"
I still laugh out loud about that one. That is when its time to stop pushing a boat!!!Kenny, I thought you where getting out of your mint condition Cig for a bigger boat? Although an outerlimits is a better boat in many areas. Good luck looking around. All I can say is before you buy, o to her home town and talk to her freinds!!! :D :D :D

rick32 01-30-2002 06:48 AM

Ken,
I say look at all and everything. You took time & great care of your last boat, no doubt that this boat might just very well be a keeper for a while...?? Just take your time.

Decide on the best factory support, resale, ride and performance you can get..

If not, buy something mediocre or even temporary ( i.e. Cig, Outerlimits / Hustler ) or wait for the new 38'-40' SUNSATION...... :)

My two, ..just one man's opinion,
Rick32 :D :D :D

waterspeed 01-30-2002 08:42 AM

GO for the Outerlimits....I've owned 3!!! They are the best built, best handling and safest boats made. Not to metion the 6'2 headroom down below...The Outerlimits you are considering is one of the cleanest and best maitained boats on the market. You will get both the speed and the comfort you desire. The 42 Tiger is a nice boat, but obviously I'm partial to the Outerlimits!
Just my .02

rainmn 01-30-2002 09:31 AM

Puder - I was standing on the jetty when Pete came through the inlet at the OPA race last year. That had to be the most impressive sight of the day, including the race.

DEVIL MAN 01-30-2002 01:58 PM

kwb....Sit down and talk to Stinson....he has extended experience driving both boats...in all types of water conditions. His opinion opposes many opinions on this thread...especially when it comes to high speed runs in the Pacific in the rough stuff!!!! Good luck KWB....

Brad 01-30-2002 10:29 PM

I have owned two cigarettes and think the ride is going to be hard to beat. I have never been in an OL but they have a great reputation. I really don’t think the 37 OL will run with the 42 Cig. in rough water. The 36 Cig dominated every rough water race this year in APBA F2. I don’t follow SBI as close, were their any OL racing against the Cig? Good luck on whatever you decide!

DJD 01-30-2002 10:38 PM

I own a Cigarette and race an Outerlimits.
I have to agree with Waterspeed (my faithful throttleman), Outerlimits is the way to go.
Safest, fastest, best handling bar none.
P.S. Cig is for sale ;)
