The only way to prevent getting bad check or cash, is to exchange money using bank check, account transfer, etc. in person, at the buyers bank. The bank the check/account was drawn from. That's the only way I will do business anymore.

So if you ask the person that is giving you the check what the approximate balance is on the account. Then see if the person on the phone gives you something in the same range? If the amounts aren't even close, then you know something is up.
