Rough water pics

I'd like to see some rough water pics. Not race boats! Just your everday sport boat out in the high sea's, whether it be a 22ft Scarab or a 47ft Fountain. My scariest time was a couple summers ago I had my old Four Winns Liberator 241 on Lake Michigan in 5-6 ft seas. I couldnt go more than 25. I hit a wave, stuffing the bow, and I was soaked head to toe.

Also, this summer, I was idling in my 40ft excalibur when the big sea dog(75ft 50k lb) planed off 100 yards in front of me. I idled thru its wake and the bow came up, then down right into the next swell, and water came over the deck, washing the whole deck down for me

10ft seas? Holy $%&T!

Here's a question.

Lets say your out on the big water and you break down in 5-7ft seas. Is it a good Idea to throw anchor with a large amount of line, or better off floating till help comes?

How about if caught at sea in a Lightning storm? Someone told me to shut everything down, motors, electonics etc, and wait it out?

had something similar happen to me. at the last stop on our (LEOPA) summer poker run my self and another boat stoped to take a swim and watch the fast boats come in. as one of our members came by in his TopGun he slowed and made a loop around us to get the thumbs up that were OK an not broke down. his boat was just off plane and making a huge bow wave. as the wake hit my boat it diped my transom very deep and it came up over my swim platform and crested over my sun pad. almost thought the boat was going down. honestly all i could do was laugh about it and i appeciated the drive by from the topgun to see if we were OK. :drink:

Mild Thunder Not a good thing to happen but if you were caught offshore by useing a type of chute not anchor to hold your bow into the waves would be one way but you have the drift to worry about. In school we were told when in deep water to use what ever we had let's say it was a larger sail boat we could use a wooden hatch tied at four corners or anything that would cause drag on the bow. They do sell the drag chut's at west marine.Seems the use of a anchor would be allright if you had enough line and it was strong enough.

2 years ago we got caught in a storm coming back from Beaver Island (Lake Michigan) We were running with some friends that have a 38'Sea Ray Sundancer and the only time we could see him was when we were BOTH on top of the swells at the same time, if we were on top and he was down in the trough we couldn't even see the top of his radar and we were only 200 yards apart.
It took us 4 hours to go 35 miles and my bilge pump ran most of the time, twice it couldn't keep up and we would pick up a miss. We even (on both boats) tied 50' lines around our waist and the other end to the largest fenders I have and laid the fenders on the rear seat. we didn't think we were going to make it and we couldn't turn around and thought if some of us ended up in the water the other boat might be able to hook the fenders and pull us in. I was never so scared in my life and it lasted 4 hours. JB

thats when its big when the boat you are following or leading disappears for 2 seconds.

Not 10's and no pix but the Tiara salesman was running a 43' and couldn't believe we were out there. First run of spring 2004....with the 35'...After 30-40 min it was time to come inside.

lets see pics!!! we dont get no rough water in lake cumberland. the roughest I have been in was ohio river 10 mph winds, realistically 3-4ft wake of a barge in a 18 checkmate...only fer like a few seconds....it feels worse than ud think.

Marc, why don't you show the pics of you running in the big water? Or were you like the rest of us and holding on for dear life? We were just concerned to make it to Charlevoix alive. Everyone on our boats had there heads stuck in plastic bags vomitting and Ron and myself didn't dare take our hands of the wheel or the sticks. When we got back to Charlevoix we learned that they wouldn't even let the Beaver Island Ferry go out. :(

If you don't have a chute, a five gallon bucket will work as a storm anchor, but I doubt many performance boats would have one handy. :D

Here are some shots of a Coast Guard boat doing what I believe they call 'surf drills'.
