382 Formula Fastech - How Fast?
How fast is a 382 Formula Fastech with 500 EFI's?
Looking at moving up and am wondering if it should run at least 80mph. Thanks |
Why the heck are all you guys selling your boats, when I can't afford to move up?!?!?
First it's DJD, then Audacity, now you Vyper! You guys have no consideration... :) Wonder if I can talk the Admiral into putting off the new house for a couple of years... Powerboat did a review of the 353, with HP500EFI's it ran 81 mph: http://archive.powerboatmag.com/2000/02/docs/features/classy.operator.html They also did a test on 382 Poker Run edition, which was probably a bit lighter than a full cabin model and had 580 hp Lingenfelter Engineering motors - it ran 85 and change. http://archive.powerboatmag.com/1999/01/docs/features/feature005.html Good luck! |
Mike, I sent you a message to see if your interested in my boat?
|
I have a 2000 model w/ 150 hours. Depending on load, fuel and people, it will get a minimum of 75 to a high of 78 "empty" with Lab finished props. I used to get a couple of miles higher until I installed XR Drives. Boat is as new. Would be interested in a sale or trade plus cash for a Formula 400 SS. The boat is awsome. It eats up any kind of sea condition. My 78 year old mother in law just spent 2 months visiting us (great lady, sorry to see her leave) and we logged over 700 miles with her and my brother-in-laws family. She loved it. My non boating wife is now a boater and wants to cruise.
|
96 Vyper - are you at least considering the PQ 380? the factory had it down here a month or so ago for the poker run, 500EFI's, stand-off boxes, lab finished props? ran 83MPH. A 382 was here also, 575'S ran (maybe 85).
Kent |
Yes, I am considering 38 PQ. Also looking at 37 Formula SS or used 40 SS. It would be hard to buy a sport cruiser especially after running in last weekends poker run :D I was the only PQ in the poker run.
Note: I believe President of Formula was at the MOCA Poker Run. I need to take a ride in both along with wife. So if anyone near Lake St. Clair wants to offer a ride, that would be great. I'm wondering if the extra weight in the Formula will help when traveling through ruff crap Lake Erie and Detroit Rive throws at us. Maybe a dealer rep will contact me with their thoughts. But want to hear from owners. |
forget the formula get a 38 fountain i have both and the fountain is far better ,
|
Just to throw a couple of other hats into the ring ;)
Talk to Cardshark about his 388 Hustler... or a 37 Active Thunder or a 38 Top Gun or.... FYI, there's a 97 382 down at Sun Dog Marine, has twin HP500's (carb'd), it's been there for at least a year, probably closer to 2. The guy's been dropping the price, you might want to take a look. It does have the coolest graphics I've ever seen on a Formula, looks like a meteor with vapor trails... http://yachtworld.com/listing/yw_listing_detail.jsp?checked_boats=666826¤c y=USD&units=Feet Looks like you'll have lots of *ahem* advice :D |
I really want to know the truth. I know how most guys are that say they are 6'4" and I stand taller than them at 6'2". Why can't anyone tell the truth about how fast their boat is or how tall or long they are. My boat goes 60.2 mph on gps but, I have talked to people with the same boat, same engine and theirs goes 72. Come on!!I want to hear the speed of a 38' Formula, full fuel, 4-6 people, gear, beer, and what ever else people put in their boat for a weekend. I wont think less of you if your boat only goes 75, I will think more of a person that doesn't have little man syndrome.
|
Oh yea, I meet a guy with a 38' Hustler with HP500s and he said his boat runs 98 mph. Uh huh!! That guy only stood about 5'5". What's whith these little guys.
|
Magic Sandbar - You need to get your 496HO off of 4,500 rpm :D
I have them also, if I wait I can see 4800, will lab the props this winter! ps: don't forget anchor, rode, docklines, misc. sunscreen, etc :D |
uh oh.........the truth shall set you FREE!
|
my 38 fountain will go 83 mph on gps and not a mile faster i hear of guy with the same set up going 88-89-and aguy that said 92 ha ha bull****
|
Nort. ( AKA Universal Chaos ) :D :D
|
Kents, I will be getting my Lab finished prop back Tuesday and I am hoping to get 4800-4900 rpm and I'll see if I can hit 95 (hehe).
|
Nort, your'e slackin dude.
|
96Vyper, I don't know if you are intrested in a hustler, but there's a 99 388 slingshot for sale at the Awesome factory on 26 mile west of I-94 a few miles. They took it on trade and are only asking $139,000 which is real cheap for that boat. It has 502 mags in it. It's on the boats for sale board on oso. Then you wouldn't have one of a thousand fountians & formula's out on st clair.

MS seriously. let me know the results, did you send them to merc?
|
Kentz, I have two props, one for Lake Powell(3600') a 22" and a 24" for Havasu. At Powell I am getting 53.8 mph @ 4600 rpm and I have not sent the 24" in for Lab yet. I sent the 22" to Bronson Hill.
|
My 2001 FASTech 382 with HP500EFI's will do 95MPH in the ocean, but I've never seen it do that. That's because I have the following:
200 gallons of gas = 1300lbs 20 gallons of fresh water = 160lbs 24 beers (12oz) = 18lbs 4 people = 600lbs 1 generator = 500lbs 1 TV/VCR = 50lbs 1 900W entertainment system = 35lbs 1 Refrigerator = 75lbs 1 7000BTU A/C unit = 150lbs 1 Potty holding tank = depends 1 60amp battery charger = 35lbs 1 Set of tools = 10lbs 1 Coast guard kit with flares = 3lbs 1 Anchor w/250' 5/8" line and 15' chain = 30lbs 4 Subway sandwiches (double meat) = 2lbs 1 Set of extra boat keys = .25lbs So.....with Lab-Finished props, I get 75MPH. If I start unbolting things and tossing them overboard, who knows? I just may see 95. Nort (aka Universal Chaos) :D :D :D :D |
Nort, 24 beers, 4 sandwiches, this must be when you volunter at the senior communtiy center for rides to Catalina to watch dump ducks :D
|
volunteer, Jeffrey spell check please
|
Oh.....I forgot.
The boat is 10,450lbs less that stuff. I forgot the stand-off boxes.....so I'll add 100lbs for that. The total is 12,218.25lbs.....plus anything that might be in the potty tank (which is always nothing). Nort (aka Universal Chaos) :D :D :D :D |
Hmmm...Looks like the formula will need more ponies for 80mph PhantomChaos traveles like me except 4 people in my boat would = 1040#'s (4 guys ex college linemen) less with the wives, except my wife keeps gaining weight weekly...she's with baby!!!

hotboat said "my 38 fountain will go 83 mph on gps and not a mile faster i hear of guy with the same set up going 88-89-and aguy that said 92 ha ha bull**** "
I hear that - cracks me up. I've got a 28' Powerquest, 502 Mag. Factory says 65-67 mph with this setup. I see 65-66 with a quarter to a half tank of gas and one person on the boat. Couple other guys on this board have the same boat and see similar speed. So I'm cruising boattrader (I'm selling) and I find an ad from a guy in Kentucky, same boat, same power, 72 mph! He must have the best running 502 Mag Merc ever put together... Either that or it's the white lightning... |
Hey Nort, I'm confused.
So then, do you use your potty holding tank or just go in your "depends"? :D :D :D I agree, I had a 62 mph boat that could run along side a 75 mph boat of the same type. Hmmmmmm.... Did ya ever notice, that beer makes boats go faster? The more beer ya drink, the faster your boat goes. :D :D Mark |
Mark-
Of course it goes faasssssster. There's less weight with less beer! Actually....the 75 is right on as stated. But with minimal gas /water / people....I get almost 80. Not bad for a condo on the water. Nort (aka Universal Chaos) :D :D :D :D [ 08-15-2001: Message edited by: PhantomChaos ] |
There's one piece of equipment that slows down every boat that has it - the GPS :D
Just leaving the damn thing at home gets me 2-3 mph, easy... |
Yeah.......the GPS. Too much weight! Throw it overboard and gain 5MPH.
Nort (aka Universal Chaos) :D :D :D :D :D |
96vyper,
The "Honest Brew" runs an honest (on GPS)76 mph fully loaded with fuel and Molson and 4 people, got 78 mph out of it this spring(cold air, dense water)but I'm only running 28' pitch Bravo I's. Gonna try having the wheels lab finished and tweaked to 29" and see what happens. I have to say that the newer Avengers run great, smooth, no chine walk, the problems they had with the 98-99 are gone. boathead |
I can also claim a honest 75 with fuel and people on board. Absolute perfect conditions I have hit 80. These are GPS figures for a 380 Avenger.
|
I had a dealer-mechanic tell me the 35 Nordic heat w/ THP500EFI's goes low ninety's. I call bullsh%^ on that one. Maybe low 80's.
|
See, you guys are cool. I can believe a 38' boat with 500 EFIs can run an honest 75 on gps. But when some little guy with a big boat tells me his boat is the best hull ever (38' Hustler) and it will run 98 on gps, I think he is tring to make up for something.
|
Hey-
It looks like www.hotboat.net did a test. I don't think it had stand-off boxes, but it shows 79.8Mph with HP500EFI's. Take a look at this link....they have a ton of boats on there. http://free.hotboat.net/tests/recent.html Nort (aka Universal Chaos) :D :D :D [ 09-17-2001: Message edited by: PhantomChaos ] |
magic sandbar that 388 slingshot does about 83-85mph
|
F-2 racer ( throttleman )in the National Points race, says his 388 slingshot runs mid to high 80's, claims boat out of the factory runs 80mph, period.
|
96Vyper - To paraphrase PhantomChaos:
My 2000 FASTech 382 with 600DPX's will do 105MPH in the ocean, but I've never seen it do that. That's because I have the following: 200 gallons of gas = 1300lbs 20 gallons of fresh water = 160lbs 24 waters (12oz) = 18lbs 4 Bottles of wine = 12lbs 10 Diet Pepsi's = 9lbs 1 Bottle Captain Morgan = 4lbs 2 people = 400lbs 1 generator = 500lbs 1 TV/VCR = 50lbs 1 900W entertainment system = 35lbs 1 Refrigerator = 75lbs 1 7000BTU A/C unit = 150lbs 1 Potty holding tank = depends 1 60amp battery charger = 35lbs 1 Set of tools = 15lbs 1 Coast guard kit with flares = 3lbs 1 Anchor w/250' 1/2" line and 8' chain = 25lbs 1 Anchor w/150' 3/8" line and 3' chain = 15lbs 8 PFD's = 4lbs 1 Set of extra boat keys = .25lbs 1 Box of spares = 10 lbs 1 Bucket of cleaners, etc. = 20 lbs 5 Overnight bags (1 for me, 4 for her) = 80lbs So.....with somewhat wrinkled props, I get 79MPH an GPS. If I start unbolting things and tossing them overboard, who knows? I just may see 105. (Due credit given to Nort.... :D ) |
A friend of mine has the identical boat as C-Spray with Volvo 600's and DPX drives.
I have ran next to this boat a number of times. The winner is usually the one with the least amount of fuel in the tank. As a reference, I can run 81 when low on fuel, and around 78-79 with a load. |
Guys, just for the heck of it, what does the 382 run with triple 500's or does the 382 fastech not allow triples?
Was the 419 the only Formula with triples? |
No triples on the 382. Only the 419 (now discontinued for 2001) has the triple setup.
