Depends on material your drilling, size, drill, blind hole or thru? These will help determine # of flutes, angle and rake.

Greenfield, Clevland Twist are both excellant drills. Stay away from the imports, unless you just drill plastic. You can tell a cheap drill from a quality one just by looking at them. Like Audio said, speed, lube, and pressure are what will make or break a drill. Too many people think if you use a faster rpm, it will drill faster. Just burns up the drill faster. Rule of thumb, the larger the drill, the slower the rpm's. I resharpen them by hand. Peice of cake. Tried the drill doctor. I can do better by hand.

Does Snap-On (Blue Point?) and Matco actually make their own bits, or just sell them?

good info ,this is why OSO needs a tool tech forum.

thanks for the replies , i'm not going all out in drilling at high rpm , or forcing at low rpm , just seems that the drill bits aren't worth a crap these days. i need to buy 1 good set and sooo many choices , sooo, oso is the only place i know to get the best info...

btw , those drill docs really work??

If you know what you are doing. Seen many people use them only to grind a neg relief with them. That won't drill thru butter. But for most part, they are good for the home do it your selfer. Won't find one in a good machine shop.

I only go into Harbor Freight Tools when I need something cheap and fast that I won't depend on more than twice.

I picked these up a a few months ago, and they have done very well for me. Not one break. (knock on wood)

A $20.00 bill is the best drill bit sharpener that I have ever had,,, works every time. I agree buy the best Cobalt you can find and takie care of them.
