My point is, you said it was opinion that Apache is the best big water offshore boat built. Give me a better built big water offshore racing boat built (even today) and put it up against an Apache. Is there a boat that can keep up when it's really rough?

Fountain was building boats back in the 80's and 90's. Couldn't win in true offshore race conditions.

I would bet most of the manufactures have boats that would would beat it. Do you have any proof that the latest race boats won't ? You hear the same talk about how fast the old muscle cars were...

The 80's boats were 80's technology. Do you think the boats aren't built as well now as 20 years ago? Do you think they slowed down?

Fountian was getting into racing in the 80's and DOMINATED THE 90's race circuit.

I think the move to build LIGHTER boats in the late 90's prevailed as a result of bringing the races out of the open seas and closer to the fans. This is a direct correlation to your second point. Fountain was getting spanked in the 80's and as the races went to smoother water, Fountain built lighter faster boats that ran better in the smooth. Reggies a smart guy, I'm not taking that away. You ask if I think boats aren't built "as well" as 20 years ago. Well, now you are definitely getting into opinions. Heavier boats = handle the rough better.

Both boats are well built for the rough stuff, but this also makes them slower than others with similar power. If I had to pick, I'd have to choose the cig. Hugely popular everywhere, with a fascinating history as well.

I think that could be the Apache battle of the seas video, there's also the 91' year in review by Freeze Frame. Some killer footage of the Apaches running in seas that most of us wouldn't think of.
